Theatre Arts Courses at Vanier

About Theatre Arts Courses

The Theatre Arts courses are designed to offer a grounding in theatre, allowing each student the oppportunity to discover which level of theatre he/she wishes to participate in - as a member of the audience, in amateur productions or as a professional. Those who wish to learn about theatre and themselves will have the opportunity to do so. And those who wish to go into theatre as a professional will have a firm base from which to work.

In our theatre courses, students are exposed to all aspects of performance: movement, voice and improvisation, script work, acting and direction, light, costume and scene design and set building. Through active participation in the theatrical process, students are encouraged to develop a critical approach to the performing arts.

When you graduate from Vanier, you will be ready to make informed choices as to how you will further your study in theatre - at university or a professional training school (eg. National Theatre arts School). You will be able to decide what aspect of theatre study you wish to focus on: technical (lighting, set design, costume); administrative (publicity, box office, theatre management); acting or directing.

Film & Media Studies at Vanier

About Film & Media Studies Courses

Film (and Media Studies) offer courses ranging from "hands on" video making, cinema and TV appreciation and criticism, digital media technology design. Success in this program can lead to university studies and careers in communications, the mass media, journalism, computer media design, television, video and film production and advertising.

During the last four decades visual media have become the principal way peoples and cultures communicate. Film and television surround us and serve us in such a variety of ways that their role in society has become vital; and today's new electronic media have become so essential that without them there would be no culture as we know it. In Film and Media Studies we offer students a wide array of courses that address these phenomena, from hands-on video and digital-imaging technologies to cinema and communications studies. We aim to stimulate interest in interpreting communications and understanding media in their social and aesthetic context. Workshop courses emphasize participatory learning, practising technology through exercises, and intensive feedback in peer-review sessions on projects. Students in Film and Media Studies can take these courses as a creative, complementary activity, or they can use them as a spring-board to further a career in video and film production, media and journalism, or digital design.
