General Overview

The Department of Business Administration educates students to become highly skilled and knowledgeable in the basic areas of business and to obtain the broader skills, background and knowledge necessary to be an effective professional in a rapidly-changing global economy. Business Administration graduates work in a variety of industries, including: finance, insurance, transportation, food, manufacturing, travel, and aeronautics.

The Vanier Business Administration Program is designed to provide the students with an exciting, contemporary education. Focused around a core of accounting and marketing courses, and incorporating the latest information technology, business graduates will also acquire skills in a wide variety of business areas including marketing, finance, and human resources.

Up-to-date management information and computer courses are not only taught and fully integrated into many courses, but the new, state-of-the-art Business Computer Laboratory offers students the opportunity to do their homework or pursue other business studies at their pace.

Program Objectives

Both the Accounting and Management as well as the Marketing and Management programs are designed to:

  • Enable students to acquire competence in the exercise of the occupation, i.e. carrying out the tasks and activities of the occupation at the level required for entry into the job market
  • Help students integrate into the working world by familiarizing them with the job market in general, and the specific context of the selected occupation
  • Foster the students' personal growth and encourage their continuing professional development
  • Ensure students' future job mobility by helping them to acquire career-management skills and an awareness of entrepreneurship.

Tax Clinic

Third year Accounting and Management Students gain practical experience by participating in Vanier's Tax Clinic. Students prepare real tax returns, for real clients. Extensive training is also provided by the Tax Clinic coordinator Anna Schiavi, CA.

Exchange Program

Launched in 2005, Vanier has an exchange program with colleges in France. This semester, 16 students from France are studying Business Administration at Vanier. The exchange program will be expanded in 2006 to include United Kingdom and Ireland. It is planned that selected Vanier students will be able to study abroad in 2007.

Hands-On Research Projects

All second year Marketing students take part in consumer marketing research projects. These projects provide a great learning environment through practical experience. In 2005, students studied the influence of brand awareness on consumer preferences, with over 1000 completed surveys in 2 days!
