The Building Systems Engineering Technologist

The new Building Systems Engineering Technology program was implemented in the fall of 2004. This program is based on a comprehensive set of competencies provided by the Ministry of Education after intensive consultation with the industry. This 2004 program places special emphasis on maintenance, service, and automation of building systems, using our new computer controlled training laboratories.

Modern buildings utilize sophisticated computer controlled engineering systems to maintain the indoor air quality and comfort levels for their occupants. Similar engineering systems are used to create the right environment (temperature & humidity levels) for processing, preservation and transportation of food and pharmaceutical products.

|

The Building Engineering Technologists are generally considered as the middle managers (under the supervision of engineers) and are employed by the industry for the design, cost estimation, installation supervision and management of the building mechanical systems. They may also be employed for equipment distribution (Technical sales), testing and servicing of their components. Based on the statistics published by industry and the Québec Ministry of Education, graduates from BSET are in high demand and have one of the highest rates of employment.

Program Objectives

The objectives of this program are to provide graduates with the following skills in the fields of the design, cost estimation and management of the engineering systems for buildings and the food industry:

- Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CAD).
- Selection and layout of the system's components.
- Supervision of the installation, servicing and management of the systems and their components.
- Application of National, Provincial and City codes.
- Selection and evaluation of controls and building automation systems.
- Utilization of the energy conservation and heat recovery units in buildings.
- Estimation of project construction costs for the preparation of public bids.
