November 8, 2007 saw two highly successful fund-raisers, a Wine and Cheese and a Silent Auction. These events had been organized by the International Education Office to raise funds to assist the six Vanier students who had been selected to participate in the Malawi Study Trip taking place in January, 2008. This study trip is part of a larger program, Vanier AIDS Action in Africa, whose goal is to increase awareness amongst Vanier students of Canada's combat against HIV/AIDS in Africa, and the effects of the pandemic on the world.
Throughout the day, members of the community could visit The Learning Centre to begin bidding on items and lessons contributed by Vanier staff and faculty and by outside enterprises. Baking had been contributed by Vanier bakers. At 4:00 pm, the Wine and Cheese began with MC Donny Insogna. A short program featured opening remarks by the Director-General, Mr. Gilbert Héroux, and a speech of thanks to Cari Clough, Sonali Srivastava, Doug Miller, and Pam Espinosa and her team of Jennifer Joseph and Emily Myles, by Judy Macdonald. The highlight of the program was the singing of the national anthem of Africa, God Bless Africa, by Erica Phare, Vanier’s choir mistress, student Jessica Laflamme, and Michael Plummer. Bidding on the Silent Auction continued in total excitement until its closure at 6:00 pm. A great time was had by all; plus our financial expectations were more than met, thanks to the generosity of the entire community.
