The prospect of competing in a world championship right after an Olympics is a daunting one, but the disappointment of Beijing made it appealing to Canadian wrestler Martine Dugrenier.
She didn't waste the opportunity, either.
Dugrenier, of Montreal, won gold in the 67-kilogram class at the world championships which concluded in Tokyo on Monday. Dugrenier, a three-time world silver medallist entering Beijing, finished fifth at the Olympics after losing her final two matches in the dying seconds in the 63-kilogram class.
She had the option of skipping the worlds, but elected to go. Dugrenier felt she had something more to give.
"It was tough because people were so proud of my performance, but inside of me I knew I could do a little better," she said. "I think what happened was I got another experience at the Olympics and that experience helped me out at this world championships. I was ready. I analyzed and looked over some of the mistakes and felt confident going to the worlds."
