WRESTLING ALUM WINS RHODES SCHOLARSHIP

Congratulations to Michael Noonan who became only the 4th Concordia student in the past 22 years to receive a prestigious Rhodes Scholarship. Michael wrestled at Vanier in 2006 and 2007 where he won numerous medals at various competitions. His announcement was highlighted in a story in the Montreal Gazette as well as other publications. THREE WRESTLING ALUMS WIN QFAE AWARDS

Vanier was pleased to find out that wrestling alumna Nikita Chicoine not only won a $2000 award from the Quebec Federation for Athletics Excellence at their awards ceremony of November 30th, but that she was also picked by the federation as their Woman Athlete of the Year!
Two other Vanier wrestling alums who also picked up awards were David Tremblay and Greg Rossy. All are competing as part of the Concordia University program. Click for more on this win. |

This time she took top honours in the 67 kg category and was also named Women's MVP of the University of Toronto Wrestling Invitational Tournament held on Saturday, November 19th. Greg Rossy (left) won a Gold Medal in the heavyweight category at the Junior National Wrestling Championships held in Edmonton March 24-27. Team mates Dorothy Yeats won a silver in the 67 kg category and Jordan Lee Byer won a bronze in the 96 kg category. Way to go, everyone!

EIGHTH NATIONAL TITLE FOR DUGRENIER
DAVID TREMBLAY WINS HIS 1ST NATIONAL TITLE

Competing in the under-67 kg category at the Senior Championships in Edmonton, Martine Dugrenier won her eighth national title and was also nominated by her federation for the Female Athlete of the Year award for a fourth time.
|
Her victory will allow her to defend her world title at the upcoming World Championships which will be held in Turkey this autumn. But Dugrenier will not be the sole representative of the Belle Province at the Worlds. Montreal's David Tremblay (55 kg), another alum from Vanier College's wrestling program, won the national title in his weight category for the first time in his career. With the win, David also gets a direct pass to the World Championships. David beat Steven Takahashi from Ontario in the final, allowing him to also represent the country at the Pan American Games next fall as well as at the Worlds.

Former Vanier wrestlers David Tremblay (57 kg), David Zilberman (130 kg) and Nikita Chicoine (67 kg) all won Gold Medals to lead the Concordia Wrestling team (coached by our own Victor Zilberman) to a first-place showing at the 2011 Canadian Inter-university Sports Championships held on February 25-26 in Thunder Bay.
The conclusion of the day – the men’s heavyweight division final - was the deciding factor in the hotly-contested men’s championship. In that match, David Zilberman defeated Charles Thoms of UNB (90-130 kg category) to give Concordia a total of 55 points to UNB’s 52. See photo.

| It was recently announced that Vanier Physical Education teacher Victor Zilberman, coach of World Champion Martine Dugrenier was the first ever ten-time winner of a Petro Canada Coaching Excellence Award. “These awards are a great opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of many of our great coaches, including our first 10-time recipient of this award, wrestling coach, Victor Zilberman,” stated John Bales, Chief Executive Officer, Coaching Association of Canada. | Vanier Physical Education teacher Victor Zilberman, coach of World Champion Martine Dugrenier was among 10 elite coaches awarded $10,000 grants from Chevrolet's "Making Dreams Possible" program. Zilberman said, "... coaches are really producing behind the scenes. So, this kind of recognition motivates us to work even harder." Vanier wrestlers performed admirably at the Under-18 National Wrestling Championships held in Fredericton, New Brunswick on the weekend of April 4th and 5th.
Our top results came from Gregory Rossy (seen at top right) who nabbed a silver medal in greco-roman as well as a bronze in freestyle.
Continuing Vanier's tradition of also producing strong women wrestlers, our very own Karyanne Lacoursière (seen at bottom right) won a bronze medal at the Under 18 Nationals in freestyle.

Concordia wrestlers and particularly Vanier alumni had a fine showing at the 2009 CIS Canadian University Championships. At the top of the list was David Tremblay (at top right) who not only won Gold in the 61 Kg weight class, but was also named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.
Another former Vanier wrestler who was tops in his division was Alex Dyas (at bottom right) who won the Gold Medal in the 90Kg weight class. Other former Vanier wrestlers to mount the podium were David Zilberman who won Bronze in the 130 Kg weight class and Nikita Chicoine won Bronze in the the Women's 67 Kg weight class.
They all helped propel Concordia to one of their best ever team showings in the Canadian Championships. Concordia improved from their 2008 team finish of 10th place to 3rd place this year. Congratulations to the wrestlers for a great showing both on a team as well as on an individual level. Read more. |

Dugrenier (left), won the Gold Medal in the 67-kilogram class at the world championships which finished in Tokyo on Monday, October 13, 2008. The victory was all the more sweet for Martine following her disappointment at the Beijing Olympics where she lost two close matches, both in the dying seconds.

Annual Concordia University Wrestling Invitational was held Sunday,
Nov 4. More than 120 athletes from the U.S., Brazil, Ontario, the
Maritimes and Quebec participated. Vanier wrestlers as well as wrestling
alumni figured prominently in the winners. Concordia's Alex Dyas
(82 kg) and Tyler Marghetis (76 kg) won their divisions. For Vanier,
Gabriel Choueke (55 kg), David Tremblay (60 kg) and Nikita Chicoine
(63 kg) won their weight classes. For the Montreal-YMHA Wrestling
Club, David Zilberman (96 kg), Cleo Ncube (72 kg), James Mancini

WRESTLERS DOMINATE AT MONTREAL INTERNATIONAL WRESTLING TOURNAMENT
Vanier College hosted
this year's Montreal International Wrestling Tournament over the
weekend of April 7-8 and took home the lion's share of the medals.
Over 120 wrestlers from the U.S. and Canada participated in the
event, and almost all of the winners were either current Vanier
athletes or alumni of the Vanier Wrestling program under coach

Championships held in China in October 2006, Martine won her second

Montreal wrestlers earned
six first-place finishes at the University of Western Ontario Open in
London, Ont. during the weekend. Concordia's Tyler Marghetis, Patrick
Okpalugo, and women's wrestler Hana Askren topped their weight classes,
as did Vanier College's David Tremblay. Nick Gkaeni and Martine

athletes had a strong showing at the annual Guelph University Open this
weekend. Misha Japardidze and Martine Dugrenier won gold, Giya
Sissaouri and David Tremblay took silver, while Patrick Okpalago
grabbed bronze. Meanwhile, 480 wrestlers from Canada and the U.S. competed
in the Essex Junior Invitational in Sarnia, Ont. Kulbur Gill of the
Montreal YMHA club won gold and Michael Noonan of Vanier College
captured silver.

Six Montreal wrestlers won their respective weight division during the
weekend at the McMaster Invitational in Hamilton, Ont. YMHA wrestlers
Rajveer Talhan (61 kilograms), Gurveer Talhan (65 kg), Tyler Marghetis
(76 kg), Alex Dyas (90 kg) and Hana Askren (48 kg women) won
their divisions, as did Vanier College's Nikita Chicoine (59
kg women). Vanier's Gabriel Choueke (54 kg) and David Tremblay
(57 kg) finished second. Meanwhile, at the Clansman Invitational in
Vancouver, Jamie Mancini of the Montreal YMHA finished third
in the 60-kg division.
