Our men’s Division 1 basketball team played its first exhibition game of the season on Saturday, at home against Jonquiere, which should be one of the top D2 teams this year, and which is coached by our alum Ben Millaud-Meunier. We won the game comfortably, by a score of 96-68. Our leading scorers were Steeve Joseph and Chris Biekeu with 18 points each. Pier-Olivier Racine had 17 points. Karim Mané and Josh Koulamallah had 10 points each, and Nginyu Ngala and Josh Mein each added 9 points.

On Sunday we travelled to Lennoxville to scrimmage the Bishop’s University Gaiters, taking on much stiffer competition. We played 4 10-minute quarters, like a complete game, and then a “bonus” 5-minute session at the end. Our players struggled at the beginning of the game with the physicality of the older Gaiters players, and we lost the first 2 periods. But, we eventually got used to competing against the stronger and tougher Gaiters, and we were then able to play our game. We rebounded to win the 3rd and 4th periods, and lost the extra bonus session by a point. Overall we scored 1 more point than our opponents.

I thought that the weekend was a good first step, and we definitely saw progression throughout our 2 contests. We have a lot of work to do, and many deficiencies to address, but this team has tremendous potential.

A reminder that next Sunday, September 16, is our annual Men’s Basketball ALUMNI DAY, from 10:00 AM until around 1:00 PM. If you plan on attending, and have not already confirmed to me, please email me as soon as possible.
