Here is the latest report from Division 1 Men’s Basketball head coach Andy Hertzog:

Our men’s Division 1 basketball team will play its second tournament of the summer this coming weekend at St. Laurent High School (formerly Emile Legault). You may recall that we won our first tournament, the Crossover Challenge, in May. We play 2 games this coming Saturday, at 3:00 and 7:00 PM. Come out and support your Cheetahs ! Saint-Laurent High School is located at 2395 Boulevard Thimens, Saint-Laurent, QC H4R 1T4, between Alexis-Nihon and Cavendish Boulevards.

There is a lot of news to report since my last update.

As reported previously reported on our Athletics website, our Vanier women’s head basketball coach, Rikki Bowles, left us to take a full-time position as an assistant coach at McGill University. She will be replaced by Francois René, who was her assistant last year. Best of luck to both Rikki and Francois in their new positions.

Mikitshi Basambombo from last year’s women’s team will join the UNB Varsity Reds this coming season.

Congratulations to alum Gavin Musgrave, who recently received the GMAA Distinction in Coaching award at the GMAA annual banquet. Very well deserved !

Congratulations to alum Thierry Lindor, who was nominated for Entrepreneur of the Year by the Regroupement des jeunes chambres de commerce du Québec. Thierry is a rising star in the Montreal real estate and business communities.

Congratulations to alum Max Joseph, who recently signed his first pro contract. He will join Nassjobasket in Sweden this coming season.

Alum Hernst Laroche is playing for the Haitian national basketball team.

Alum Ibrahim Ngom has transferred from Brock to Bishop’s University. Ibrahim will have to sit out the coming season, and he will resume playing in the 2019-20 season.

Alum Jeff Haynes is teaching grade 6 Math and English in Lasalle. He is married with 2 daughters aged 12 and 9. He coaches intercity soccer for his eldest.

Finally, I have some very sad news to report. Earl Delaperalle, one of the founders of the Sun Youth organization, recently passed away. There has long been a close relationship between Vanier and Sun Youth. Many of Sun Youth’s football and basketball players went on to play for Vanier. Several of our Vanier coaches (including myself) coached at Sun Youth before coaching at Vanier. Earl himself coached our Vanier Division 2 men’s basketball team for a semester in an emergency situation before I took it over the following year. Earl was an exceptional gentleman who gave more to the Montreal community than anyone I have known or can think of. His loss will be felt by the countless people whose lives he enriched an improved. Our sincerest condolences go out to Earl’s family, particularly his children Kara and Dave, and to the entire Sun Youth organization.

Best regards,
Andy Hertzog
