On Saturday, our Division 1 Men’s Football Cheetahs played at Vanier their last game of the regular season against Garneau and also emerged with a solid 31-17 win. DIVISION 1 WOMEN’S AND MEN’S BASKETBALL

On the evening of Friday, Oct. 27th, our Div.1 Women’s and Men’s Basketball Cheetahs hosted a home doubleheader VS St-Lambert. In the first game, the Women came up with a huge breakthrough 60-47 win, their first of the season! Congratulations, Ladies! Then in the second game, the Div.1 Men improved to 2-1 after taking a decisive 94-52 win. The Lady Cheetahs will next play on Friday, November 3rd in an away game at Lennoxville starting at 7:00 PM, and the Div.1 Men next play in an away game on Sunday, November 5th at Brébeuf which starts at 3:00 PM.

As usual, Div.1 Men’s Head Coach Andy Hertzog provided us with his usual detail-filled game report:

Our Vanier basketball teams were all in action this weekend.

On Friday night, our Division 1 teams hosted the Cavaliers of Champlain College Saint Lambert. The first game was even throughout the first half, as our women and the visiting Cavaliers were tied at 9-9 after the first quarter and 19-19 at halftime. Our women came out and dominated the 3rd quarter, taking a 44-32 advantage into the final period, and then they maintained the lead to win 60-47. Our leading scorer was Meagan Charbonneau with 19 points. Tatiana Toledo also scored in double figures with 11 points, and she added 5 rebounds and 5 blocked shots. Leahana John had 9 points and 7 rebounds and Catherine Destin chipped in with 8 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.

Although the second half of the doubleheader also started off as a close contest, it did not stay that way for long. Our men led 14-12 after the first quarter, with Karim Mané making a tough contested layup at the buzzer. We took control of the game in the 2nd quarter, and took a commanding 44-24 lead into halftime. We kept up the pace after the break, starting off the 3rd quarter on a 13-2 run, and eventually coasted to a 94-52 victory. We had 5 players score in double digits, led by Nginyu Ngala with 17 points (including 5/5 shooting from the 3-point line !). J.F. Daho had 15 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals. Steeve Joseph had 13 points, 5 boards, 4 assists and 3 steals. Karim Mané also had 13 points. Haris Elezovic contributed 8 points, 7 boards and 4 assists.

Our D1 basketball teams both play on the road next weekend. Our women’s team plays at Champlain Lennoxville Friday, November 3 at 7:00 PM. Our men’s team plays at Brébeuf Sunday, November 5 at 3:00 PM.

Our men’s Division 2 teams split a pair of road games this weekend. On Friday night they lost 105-55 at Montmorency, but they rebounded with a 91-77 win at Dawson Sunday afternoon. They play 2 games again next weekend. On Friday night they host Edouard-Montpetit at 8:00 PM and on Sunday they play at Marie-Victorin at 3:00 PM.

Congratulations go out to alum Tevonn Walker of Valparaiso University (NCAA Division 1) who was voted to the pre-season 2nd All-Conference team of the Missouri Valley Conference. Congratulations also go out to alum Jonathan Bermillo, who has signed a contract to play professional basketball in China.

Finally, on Tuesday, October 31st, the first CCAA national basketball rankings of the season came out, and our Vanier Cheetahs men’s Division 1 team is ranked 10th in Canada. That’s a very good start for a young team with 8 rookies on it, but we have lots of work ahead of us, including a very tough game this Sunday on the road at Brébeuf, which is ranked 14th. (Webmaster: Collège Brébeuf, 3200 Chemin de la Côte-Sainte-Catherine, Montréal, QC H3T 1C9, is just a short walk from the Côte-des-Neiges station on the Metro’s Blue Line.  See link.)

Have a great week !

DIVISION 2 WOMEN’S SOCCER

After winning their first playoff game last weekend VS Outaouais at home, our Division 2 Women’s Soccer advanced to play in the next round of the league playoffs VS Ahuntsic, which was played at Valleyfield on Saturday morning. They took a 3-3 tie into overtime where they unfortunately ended up losing to Ahuntsic by the score of 5-3. Still, we offer our congratulations to the entire team and to Head Coach Patrice Glemaud for a hard-fought season and getting as far as they did in the playoffs.

DIVISION 1 MEN’S FOOTBALL

On Saturday evening, our Men’s Division Football played their last game of the regular season at home VS Garneau and they took a decisive 31-17 decision, completing the regular season with a record of 7 wins and 2 losses, including five in a row to finish the season.
.
Samuel Emilus staked the Cheetahs to a 14-0 lead following 2 TD receptions early in the game, including a huge 64-yard touchdown catch on his 2nd major in a row all scored within 2 minutes in the first quarter. Garneau then replied with a TD of their own to make it 14-7, but then after a field goal by our kicker Adam Mahrouse made it 17-7, defensive lineman Nicholas de Francisco-Paul made a clutch interception and scored a TD for Vanier to put the game out of reach 24-7. Another TD by running back Patrick Charles late in the game made it 31-9. Garneau scored 8 more points late in the game, but it was too little too late and the Cheetahs won 31-17. The Cheetahs were led again by QB Daniel Sananes who completed 15 passes for 281 yards and 2 TDs. His favourite target was receiver Samuel Emilus who had 6 receptions for a whopping 194 yards and 2 touchdowns. Defensively, the Cheetahs were led by Claude Joseph and Darren Kyeremeh who contributed 8.5 and 7 tackles respectively. The team now advances to the league playoff quarterfinals which will be played at Vanier next Saturday, November 4th VS Notre-Dame-de-Foy, starting at 6:30 PM. Be sure to come out and support the team!!

Special congratulations to all of our Football Senior Grads (seen at left) who were honoured at Saturday’s final regular season game! Thank you for your hard work on the Football Field and all your hard work as a student. It isn’t easy but you all did a great job. Let’s keep working hard and bring home the Championship.
.
Also, we want to offer our congratulations to Kevin Teran Flores who was named as the RSEQ League’s Defensive Player of the Week. He was instrumental in Vanier’s 42-3 win over Limoilou at home last Saturday, contributing 7 tackles and 2 asssisted tackles, including 3 for a loss. Way ta go Kevin! See the league’s official announcement page.

WOMEN’S AND MEN’S RUGBY

Also on Sunday, our Women’s and Men’s Rugby Cheetahs played a road doubleheader VS André-Laurendeau (played at Riverside Park) in their last games of the regular season. Then in the second game, the Men’s team played and lost their match 47-5, finishing the season with 2 wins and 5 losses. Unfortunately, both teams just missed qualifying for the playoffs.
