DIV.1 MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM WINS AT PROVINCIALS!
March 3, 2014
The Div.1 Basketball Cheetahs had a very successful weekend at the Provincial Championships at John Abbott College. They defeated Ste-Foy 61-55 in the semi-finals on Saturday and then took the solid 77-67 victory over Dawson in the Sunday finals. The team now advances to the CCAA Nationals in British Columbia from March 12-15. Congratulations to Coach Hertzog and the entire team! VANIER WRESTLER REPEATS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP GOLD

Dorothy Yeats, a 5-time national age group champion and the 2012 Gold Medalist at the World Junior Championships, repeated her World Championship at the competition held in Sofia, Bulgaria on August 15th. Congratulations, Dory! Last year, Yeats surprised many by going on to win a Silver Medal at the World SENIOR Championships, and this year she has her sites set on the top of the podium! FRÉDÉRIQUE POTVIN NAMED ALL-CANADIAN
RECEIVES AWARD FOR THE SECOND TIME
March 13, 2013

Congratulations to Frédérique Potvin, captain of our Division 1 Vanier Basketball Lady Cheetahs. She was named on March 13th as a 2013 CCAA Women's Basketball All-Canadian, her second time to be given this national-level honour. This award came as a result of her stellar record throughout the year in the very tough Quebec division, arguably the most competitive in all Canada. Frédérique was named as the RSEQ league's Player of the Year, was tops in the league in both scoring and assists last season, and helped lead Vanier to an excellent 12-5 record. Click for more.

BOL D'OR CHAMPIONSHIP!

The Division 1 Men's Football Cheetahs won their 4th Bol d'Or in the past 7 years on Saturday in Québec City, beating the Lennoxville Cougars 25-19 in a hotly contested match between the league's two top teams. The Cheetahs were supported by a boisterous group of students, staff and parents who rode there in buses. Congratulations to head coach Peter Chryssomalis and to each team member. FLAG FOOTBALL TEAM WINS AT
REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS!

November 5, 2012
The Lady Flag Football Cheetahs played in the Regional playoffs this weekend and won the championship banner which will be raised to the rafters of our Vanier Sports Complex gymnasium! The Ladies took a tight 7-6 win over Rosemont on Saturday and then faced the undefeated team from Bois-de-Boulgne (10-0) on Sunday emerging with a convincing 31-20 championship victory. Congratulations to head coach Tara Mrakic and the entire team.

YEATS WINS GOLD AT JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
September 6, 2012
We're very happy to announce that Vanier wrestler Dorothy Yeats has won a Gold Medal in the 67 kg category at the 2012 Junior World Championships, held in Pattaya, Thailand on September 6th. She defeated Russia's Svetlana Babushkina in the finals to seal her title. This world championship is just the latest feather in the cap of this amazingly gifted athlete. Earlier this year, Dory won Gold at the Canadian Championships in both the Junior AND Senior levels. Congratulations, Dory! Click for more.

VANIER WINS AGAIN AT THE 40TH ANNUAL
MCGILL INTRAMURAL CÉGEP FESTIVAL

April 17, 2012
Vanier brought home the title of Champions from the 40th Annual McGill Intramural Cégep Festival for the fourth time in the last five years on Friday, April 13th. All six English Cégeps participated in an evening of friendly competition in Badminton, Basketball, Dodgeball, Soccer and Volleyball. We just squeaked ahead of John Abbott by a mere 1 point for the win. Congratulations to the 50 students who participated and made this all possible. Click on the photo at left.

Second year student, Dorothy Yeats, a 4-time national age group champion, who recently won the biggest annual university tournament in Canada, the Guelph Open, was the subject of a video profile on "Randy's Rookies" on CTV Montreal Sports. Dory has completely dominated university meets this year and is clearly one of Canada's top women Olymic wrestling hopefuls for a medal. Congratulations, Dory! LED OUR TEAM TO A NATIONAL TITLE LAST YEAR

Congratulations to our coach of the Division 1 Men's Basketball Cheetahs Andy Hertzog (seen at left with Sports Complex manager Linda Macpherson) who picked up his 500th victory last Friday night. Last year, Coach Hertzog led the team, currently ranked second in the country, to a national championship and with their current 6-0 record, they are are poised to go far this year as well. WRESTLERS STRIKE GOLD DOWN UNDER

Congratulations to Vanier wrestler Dorothy Yeats (far left) who won a Gold Medal in in the senior age group division at both the Commonwealth Championships and the Australian Cup held in Melbourne, Australia in Auugust 2011. Dorothy was also awarded the Outstanding Female Wrestler for both events! Vanier wrestler Vince De Marinis (at left) made us proud by winning a Gold Medal at the Australian Cup. AT ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET

Congratulations to all the award winners at this year's Athletic Awards Banquet. The top honours went to Nationals Tournament MVP Jerome Blake and to the Lady Cheetahs' Shelby Eveleigh, both from our AAA basketball teams. VANIER WINS TITLE AT MCGILL INTRAMURAL FESTIVAL
April 8, 2011

After a one year drought, Vanier took back the title of Champions at the 39th Annual McGill Intramural Festival played on April 8th. This is Vanier's third Championship title in four years. All six English Cégeps enjoyed a fun evening of friendly competition in Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton and Dodgeball. AAA MEN WIN GOLD AT NATIONALS!!

The AAA Men's Basketball Cheetahs completed an upset of epic proportions by defeating Lethbridge 102-85 in the finals of the CCAA National Championships played on Saturday night. For a second time in a row, the Vanier Player of the Game was Jerome Blake who scored 32 points and was named Tournament MVP. Congratulations to Coach Hertzog and the entire team! Click for more.

The AAA Men's Basketball Cheetahs crowned an excellent regular season by sweeping their games at the provincials to take home the coveted title and a guaranteed trip to the Nationals in Oshawa starting March 17th. JÉRÉMI ROCH WINS PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD

To cap off a tremendously successful championship season, it was no surprise that members of our football team captured the highest number of awards at the league's Awards banquet held on Saturday, December 11th. Besides Jérémi Roch's big win as the league's Player of the Year, no fewer than eight other players won awards along with Peter Chryssomalis and his team who won Coaching Staff of the Year. Our beloved Football Cheetahs won a tight-collar 31-28 victory over our longtime nemesis, the Spartiates of Cégep Vieux-Montréal to reclaim the provincial championship Bol d'Or on Saturday in Lennoxville. Matthew Norzil had 3 receptions for 99 yards, 2 of them for touchdowns. QB Benoit Lacasse threw 4 TD passes and was named Player of the Game. WRESTLING ALUM AND VANIER TEACHER MARTINE DUGRENIER WINS 3RD STRAIGHT WORLD TITLE

Martine Dugrenier (left) was able to pull off the storied "three-peat" by winning gold for a 3rd straight time at the Senior World Wrestling Championships held this year in Moscow. She defeated Elgiza Anarbekova from Kazakhstan in the finals to take the victory. You can click to find out more.

AMATEUR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

September 1, 2010

Congratulations to the Football Cheetahs' Defensive Captain Byron Archambault (left) who was the subject of an article by Arpon Basu in the Montreal Gazette of September 1st subsequent to his being named their Amateur Athlete of the Week. In 2008, Byron won the league Rookie of the Year honours and was also second in the league in tackles. Last year, he was again second in the league in tackles and then went on to be named the league's Defensive MVP. Find out more.

As assistant therapist for the Als, Max Hanna, Vanier Cheetahs Head Athletic Therapist had 24 hours to show the cup which he did in G-204 on January 12th. The Cup revisited Vanier during UB on Wed, Jan. 27th at the gym with several Alouettes also in attendance including Cheetah alumni Danny Desriveaux and Shawn Mayne, as well as Max Hanna and others. At the Quebec Sports Gala , Vanier Physical Education teachers Victor Zilberman and World Champion wrestler Martine Dugrenier were among the top 3 finalists for Quebec Coach of the Year and Female Athlete of the Year for all sports. While Martine was not selected for the top award, Victor won the Quebec Coach of Year for the 3rd time. (Victor had previously won in 1982 and 1985). Congratulations to you both! BASKETBALL STAR MARTIN WINS CCAA NATIONAL MVP AWARD

Marie-Ève Martin

Marie-Ève Martin (or Marty as she is affectionately known by her team mates and supporters) won the Canadian College Athletic Association's highest honour when she received their Player of the Year Award at a ceremony held March 18, 2009.

MYLES GIBBON SIGNS WITH USA JAGUARS

Myles Gibbon, (left) our former star Cheetahs quarterback, recently signed a Letter of Intent with the University of South Alabama Jaguars. With his selection, Myles becomes the first Canadian quarterback ever signed by a Division 1-A American university in his first year. Martine Dugrenier

Former Vanier athlete Martine Dugrenier won the Gold Medal in the 67KG category at the World Wrestling Championships which concluded in Tokyo, Japan on October 13th. Accompanied by her coach and Vanier teacher Victor Zilberman, Martine overcame all her disappointment at not doing as well as she'd hoped at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. There are several Vanier athletes who competed at the 2008 Olympics. Alumni Karine Sergerie (left) won a silver medal on Friday August 23rd in Taekwando. Sergerie, the 2007 world champion, was one of the favourites in her category and coincidentally had been picked by Sports Illustrated to win a silver medal. Read about her medal performance. Two other Vanier Olympic athletes are Alumni David Zilberman (far left) and Martine Dugrenier (at his right) who are two of Canada's top wrestlers. Martine just missed a shot at a gold medal when she lost in the very last minute to 5-time world champion Kaori Icho and then suffered a similar last-minute loss in the bronze medal match to Randi Miller of the United States. Vanier Athletics had their annual Awards Banquet on April 29, 2008 and prizes were handed out for all sports.

The top awards went to Marie-Ève (Marty) Martin and to Myles Gibbon for Athlete of the Year, female and male.

LADY CHEETAHS WIN BRONZE AT NATIONALS

Following a tough loss to their provincial rivals from Ste-Foy in the semi-finals on Saturday night, the AAA Women's Basketball team showed what they were made of by battling back for two more wins and taking the Bronze Medal at the Nationals in Truro, Nova Scotia.

The AAA Lady Cheetahs Basketball team held off a furious comeback attempt by the Montmorency Nomades to repeat as Provincial Champions. They won 66-60 before a boisterous home crowd at the Vanier Sports Complex.

Anneth Him-Lazarenko was named Player of the Game. Marie-Ève Martin added 20 points and was named Tounament MVP. Coach Ruby Viray and the Ladies will now defend their national title at the Nationals, which will be held this year at the NSAC from March 14-16 in Truro, Nova Scotia. Click for

Our Championship-winning football team placed no fewer than eleven members onto the league's All-Star squad at the CÉGEP Football Awards presentations on December 18th. Major awards also went to Myles Gibbon (League MVP), Matt Norman (Offensive Line MVP) and Samael Lavaud (Defensive MVP). The AAA Men's football team will play in the Bol d'Or final thanks to a 52-3 dismantling of Beauce-Appalaches in Saturday's provincial semi-final. They will defend their championship from last year by playing the Vieux-Montréal Spartiates in the Bol d'Or finals which will be played in Trois-Rivières on Saturday, Nov 17th at 8pm. BÉLAND IS THE NEW CO-ORDINATOR OF ATHLETICS

The Vanier College Athletics Department announced last week that former Lady Cheetahs Triple-A basketball coach Mireille Béland is the College's new Athletic Co-ordinator. Béland coached the Lady Cheetahs from 1992-2002. Mireille received the Quebec Coach Of The Year Award in 2000 and also previously won the Canadian Coach Of The Year Award in 1998. She replaces Linda Macpherson, now the manager of Vanier's Sports Complex, who had shown unswerving dedication serving as Athletics Co-ordinator since 1995. We wish both Linda and Mireille success in their new positions.

The Jamboree was created to introduce new players to the sport and all the league coaches participate to teach kids from different teams drills and skills.

Myles Gibbon (left) from our men’s AAA football team was selected by the Montreal Gazette and Global TV as their Amateur Athlete of the Week. Myles not only played a lead role in taking the Football Cheetahs to a perfect 8-0 season record, but also obliterated the league TD pass record for a single season which was 18; Myles threw 25 this season.

AAA BASKETBALL PLAYER SIGNED BY NCAA DIVISION 1 TEAM

Anaclet Mulumba Mbayi (left) from our men’s AAA basketball team has verbally accepted a full scholarship offer from Fairleigh Dickenson University in New Jersey. They are an NCAA Division 1 school which competes in the Northeast Conference.

Anaclet, who was also named an MVP in his sport at this year's Athletics Awards Banquet, will sign a letter of intent in the early signing period this November. Congratulations, Anaclet!


MEN'S AAA SOCCER TEAM'S YEAR ENDS WITH HEARTBREAKING SHOOTOUT LOSS
OCTOBER 27, 2007
Despite goals from Enos Osei and Michael Sciola, the soccer team lost an OT shootout to Champlain-St. Lambert on Friday night in the Provincial semi final at Collège Français in Longueuil. St. Lambert was up 1-0 when Michael tied it and 2-1 when Enos got the equalizer midway through the 2nd half. When two 15 minute OT periods couldn't decide the winner, it went to penalty kicks where the Cheetahs went down 5-4.

VICTORIOUS CHEETAHS HOIST TROPHY

In a thrilling come-from-behind victory, The Lady Basketball Cheetahs won Vanier's first ever Women's National Basketball Championships, defeating an extremely tough team from Collège Édouard-Montpetit 82-80 at McEwan College in Edmonton Saturday night. Trailing by 11 points at the half, the Cheetahs, showed the grit, tenacity and strength of character that they have all season. They fought back back to reduce the deficit to just 4 points by the 3rd quarter and then finally beat the tenacious Lynx to earn the national crown.

The Men's AAA Football team defeated the Champlain-Lennoxville Cougars 14-0 to win the Provincial Championship Bol d'Or in Trois-Rivières on Friday night, our first such win since 1991. The defense held the fort throughout the first half and Vanier's offense took charge of the game in the 2nd half.

Vanier Cheetah quarterback Liam Mahoney threw two touchdown passes to pace the Quebec provincial Under-19 team to the gold medal at the Football Canada Cup held July 15th in Winnipeg. The Men lost to host Ste-Foy on Friday. The women won their first game against Sherbrooke, but then lost the semifinal to Montmorency and the Bronze Medal game to Dawson.

After a heart-breaking loss in their opening game to eventual tournament winner Limoilou on the last shot of the game, Vanier's AA Men's basketball team went on to first beat Chicoutimi and then their fierce league rivals from Montmorency. In the bronze medal game VS Brébeuf, they won in the dying seconds thanks to a clutch shot sunk by Saad Beg.

AAA MEN'S BASKETBALL CHEETAHS' SEASON ENDS AT CCAA NATIONALS
March 21, 2005
After a great start which included a 91-81 win over Centennial College, our AAA Men's team next drew the #1 ranked team in the country, Cariboo College (who went on to win the entire tournament) with the result being an 89-58 loss. Congratulations to Coach Hertzog and all the team for a great run which of course included winning gold at the Provincial Championships. Also, the AA Men's team grabbed bronze in the Regional Championships and now head to the Provincials.

TEAM GOES ON TO NATIONALS IN EDMONTON
AAA WOMEN END SEASON WITH TOUGH PLAYOFF LOSS
AAA Men's Basketball team defeated Champlain 75-59 at the Provincial championships held March 5-6 at Montmorency College. AAA Women lost to Ste Foy 58-50 in the opening round.

NADIA ROC RECEIVES MAJOR AWARDS

At the Awards Banquet held the evening of March 5th, AAA Women's Basketball star Nadia Roc was picked for three awards. She had previously won a big CCAA award as well.

AAA MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH ANDY HERTZOG HITS MILESTONE

In February, our Men's AAA basketball coach Andy Hertzog recorded his 400th win at Vanier College. (Combined AA and AAA coaching career.) Congrats to Coach Hertzog on this amazing achievement! Read the story which appeared in the Gazette of February 10th.

ALL-STAR TEAM ANNOUNCED

CHEETAH FOOTBALL ALUMNI IN THE NEWS:

AAA Football alumnus Shaun Diner was just signed by the Montreal Alouettes for a two year contract. He was a starting QB for the Cheetahs in 2000 and also played for Team Canada that year. Since then, he has been a top wide receiver for UNH.

D'AGOSTINO IS AMATEUR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

AAA Basketball Cheetahs co-captain Mark D'Agostino was selected as "Amateur Athlete of the Week" by the Gazette and Global TV on December 29, 2004.

He is a big reason the team closed the year in first place with a7-1 record and a ranking of 4th in the entire country. Read the whole story from the Gazette. Congratulations, Mark!


CHEETAHS ON ALL-STAR TEAMS

The selection of league's Men's Soccer all-star team was announced on the ARSCIM website. Congratulations to those honoured: Coach Mike Morzajew along with players Guistin Hetu and team captain Alejandro Julian.

Also recently announced on the ARSCIM website were members of the Flag Football league all-star team. Congratulations to the Vanier members selected to the team: Elyse Fournier, Sarah Lucier-Boisvert and Erika Perron-Mclean along with Coach Rick Yuen.

The Cegep Rugby all-star teams were announced this past week and five Vanier players were represented. Claudia De Minico, Robin Hunter and Eufemia Giannelli made the women’s team while Morgan Herrick and Shane McNaughton were honored on the men’s side.

Finally, ARSCIM just announced their Women's Soccer all-star team and Two Vanier players were named. Congrats to Maria Christina Di Caprio and Sarah Lucier-Boisvert.

Women's Basketball alumnus, Vanessa Luciani was favourably mentioned in an online article from the Greeneville Sun of December 3rd, 2004.

MEN'S SOCCER CHEETAHS WIN
SILVER MEDAL AT PROVINCIALS

THE MEN'S TEAM AFTER WINNING THE REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Our Men's Soccer Cheetahs lost a 2-1 heartbreaker in double-overtime in the final game at the Provincial Championships on November 7th. Congratulations to Coach Morzajew and the whole team on a terrifically successful season.

"ATHLETES IN ACTION" COMES TO VANIER:

Montreal Alouettes defensive tackle Rob Brown spoke in the Vanier College Amphitheatre during the Universal Break of November 3rd as part of the "Athletes in Action" inspirational lecture series. View photos and read more about Rob and about Athletes in Action.


MEN'S FOOTBALL TEAM LOSES IN PLAYOFF
QUARTERFINALS TO BEAUCES-APPALACHES

The Men's football team season ended with a 37-18 loss to a tough team from Beauces-Appalaches in quarterfinal action on November 6th. Congratulations to Coach Chryssomalis and the team on a valiant effort.

CHEETAH ATHLETES IN THE NEWS:

Vanier soccer star Alejandro Julian was selected as "Amateur Athlete of the Week" by the Gazette and Global TV. He is the captain of the Vanier Soccer Cheetahs, who went on to the Provincials after winning the Regional Championships. Read the whole story and watch a video clip.

Yullia Zakrevskaya won first place at an inter-collegiate cross-country racing meet. Her winning time was a full minute ahead of her closest rival.

MORE GOOD NEWS:
Congratulations to Vanier Wrestlers James Mancini and Tim Wadsworth for winning gold at the Montreal International Wresting Tournament held on April 17-18, 2004 here at Vanier College. Serguei Guevorkian also won a bronze medal. In attendance were clubs from Ontario, New York and the Maritimes. Vanier Alumni David Zilberman and Martine Dugrenier also won gold while Tony Ronei got a silver. The team is off to New Brunswick next weekend for the Senior Canadian National Championship and then they're off to Italy in May. Good luck wrestlers!

Congratulations to Vanier wrestlers Jamie Mancini for winning a gold medal at the Junior Greco Roman National Championships (), and to Sergui Guevorkian for his silver medal at the Junior National Wrestling Championships held recently in Calgary.

Also, congratulations go to Tim Wadsworth for winning a bronze medal at the Acropolis International Wrestling Tournament in Athens, Greece. Fifteen countries were competing including Russia, US, and Iran.

March 10th, Damian Buckley was listed in the "Rising Stars" section: "The 6-foot-2 guard became the first Vanier College player to be named an All-Canadian for two straight years by the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association. He also was named the Quebec league's outstanding player and is the province's nominee for the CCAA player-of-the-year award." Way to go, Damian!

Long-time Assistant Coach of the Basketball Lady Cheetahs, Tina Fasone was recently inducted into the McGill Sports Hall Of Fame. Tina has coached here at Vanier for 12 years.


Vanier Football Cheetahs team captain William Miller was the second Vanier athlete within two weeks to be selected as the Amateur Athlete Of the Week by the Gazette and Global-TV. The other honouree was Daryl Rankin.


The AA Men's Basketball team capped off a great playoff run with a 102-70 win over Dawson for the gold medal at the Provincial Finals.


Cheetahs star player Damian Buckley capped off an honour-filled season by being named to the 1st all-star team and as well as being picked as an ALL-CANADIAN.


Lady Cheetahs star player Dranadia Roc was profiled in the Gazette's Sports section of January 29th, selected as their Amateur Athlete-of-the Week. You can watch a report on Dranadia in the Global television news of the same night.
