The Vanier Division 1 Men’s Football Cheetahs played their season-opener at Limoilou near Quebec City on Saturday afternoon.

After the first quarter, it was still tied up 0-0, but then Vanier quarterback Daniel Sananes threw 4 straight TD passes throughout the 2nd and 3rd quarters  to secure an insurmountable 28-3 lead. His 1st TD came from an offensive series which followed a clutch interception by Kaylan St-Cyr, where he threw a  TD pass to Cédric Fiske-Casault. After yet another TD pass to Fiske-Casault (his 2nd of the game), Sananes threw a 3rd TD via a 4-yard pass to Réginald Prophète, and then a 4th TD toss, the result of a 12-yard pass to Jonathan Exumé.

Vanier’s final 14 points in the 4th quarter came from a 4-yard TD run by Vincent Desjardins, and then an electrifying 95-yard TD interception by Ben Labrosse which allowed the Cheetahs to finish with a VERY convincing 42-3 season-opening victory! Kicker Adam Mahrouse was a perfect 6 for 6 in his touchdown converts. See below for news on Adam.

THIS JUST IN: Ben Labrosse‘s TD interception was picked as the #1 play of the week in a video compilation posted by Le Champ arrière. Click here to watch.

Also, Ben’s play won him the distinction of being named as the RSEQ league’s Defensive Player of the Week, while Adam Mahrouse was named the Special Teams Player of the Week.  Click for more.

Actually, it turns out that the team has an exceptional record in season-opening games. Since 2002, the Cheetahs have had an amazing record of 16 wins and only one loss in in their last 17 season-openers. See the PDF file. (courtesy of our statisticienne extraordinaire, Solange Boyer)

Offensively, the Cheetahs were led by QB Daniel Sananes who was 14 of 22 in the passing department, and as we said, 4 of them for touchdowns. Among his top receivers were Jahsiah Lewis-Pennicooke (3 passes for 60 yards total), Cédric Fiske-Casault (3 passes for 50 yards and 2 TDs), and Jonathan Exumé (4 passes for 36 yards and 1 TD). Our top rushers were Vincent Desjardins (15 carries for 120 yards and 1 TD), and Kevin Foster Verdier (13 carries for 71 yards). Defensively, Vanier was led by Zachary Filion (10 tackles), Dawson Pierre (8.5 tackles), and Benjamin Labrosse (6 tackles, 1 knockdown, 1 interception, 1 TD).
