Report by Denis Lafontaine, Athletics Webmaster

Five different Cheetahs Varsity teams played between Friday and Sunday, a weekend highlighted by big wins for both the Men’s Football team as well as the Women’s Soccer team, as well as a win for Division 1 Men’s Basketball in pre-season action.

On Friday evening, the Division 2 Women’s Soccer Cheetahs got thinks off on the right foot with a 2-0 shutout win at home over Maisonneuve. Both Vanier goals were scored by star player Alex Agozzino, seen below. With the win, the team improved to 2 wins, 1 loss, and 0 ties. Their next game will be played at home VS Ahuntsic on Sunday, October 1st, starting at 4:00 PM.

THIS JUST IN: Here’s a report on the Maisonneuve game that was provided to us by Eric Lacasse:

What an evening! I must add that watching our Vanier Women soccer team last Friday night was an event… watching the game in shorts with 31C heat was as hot as the game! The game started a little crazy as Maisonneuve’s right winger consistently ran down the wing to cross the ball into our goal mouth but KUDOS to our KEEP (Tianna) for settling things down. Nice to see KOTS (Clara) back from her injury and score on her first shot, but  our crowd (which was an amazing turnout!) debated with the linesman to no avail, who called her offside on the play.
GOAL #1:
KOTS controls the ball on top of the box and passes it back to Alex and she then BENDs it like Beckham right into the top corner… AMAZING!
GOAL #2:
Shining light on Alex as she comes into the 18 yrd box like a tank and drills it in for our security blanket… we are all hoping for a hat trick!
There was a moment where all of us held our breath as Reyhana got hammered by Maisonneuve’s keeper… very scary sight as Reyhana lay motionless for a while. She eventually got up and walked off the field. We all hope she is well and hurries back. Also KUDOS to our center back Brianna, (AKA XENA) as she stood as a warrior where no one passed her! That’s it until our next game, this Sunday @ 16:00 at home VS Ahuntsic. Go Cheetahs!

Also on Friday evening, the Division 1 Men’s Soccer took a tough 2-0 loss on the road to undefeated Sainte-Foy in a game played at the Université de Laval PEPS Sports Complex. Their record dropped to 0 wins, 3 losses and 2 ties. They hope to brek into the win column in their next match which will be played at home VS Garneau on Friday, September 29th starting at 8:30 PM.

On Saturday evening, the Division 1 Men’s Football team took on their perennial rival from Cégep du Vieux-Montréal. The Spartiates threw down the gauntlet early, scoring a touchdown on their very first march down the field. However, the Cheetahs defence said, “OK, that’s all you get!” and from then on, it was all Vanier as the offence responded with two touchdowns, highlighted by the electrifying 67-yard major by Cheetahs stalwart Samuel Emilus, seen below. The offence kept on piling on the points, and we finally emerged with a dominating 39-7 victory. With the win, the team improved their season record to 3 wins, 2 losses. Their next game will be a road game against André-Grasset, played on Saturday, September 30th starting at 7:30 PM. The match will be held at Claude-Robillard Sports Complex.

On Sunday, the Women’s and Men’s Rugby Cheetahs had a home doubleheader VS Dawson. In the first game, the Lady Cheetahs took a 35-0 loss to the undefeated Lady Blues. The loss dropped their record to 0 wins, 3 losses. They will have two weeks off and only play next on October 15th at home in a doubleheader VS Champlain St-Lambert. The ladies start at 12 noon and the men start at 1:30 PM.

In Sunday afternoon’s second match, the men came up short with a 31-7 loss against Dawson. With the loss, their season record dropped to 0 wins, 3 losses. They next play a road game on Sunday, October 1st at 3:00 PM against Jean-de-Brébeuf, and then after that, they play the home game on October 15th VS Champlain St-Lambert as we previously mentioned.
