After a somewhat ordinary first half, the Vanier Cheetahs played an inspired second half to seal a hard-fought 30-23 win over the Cégep Garneau Élans at home on Saturday.

The win, which was the 200th all-time regular season victory for the Football Cheetahs, put the team's season record at 5-1.

After the first 25 minutes, where hotly contested ground attacks by both teams failed to yield any points, the deadlock persisted.

The floodgates finally opened at the end of the second quarter.

The Élans, benefiting from a slew of off-side calls and also a lot of success from their power rusher Brad Laplante, brought the ball to the one yard line of the Cheetahs. Vanier's defense, however, withstood FOUR successive attempts assaults to force a turnover.

The Cheetahs offence then came through later with a sequence that ended with an 11-yard touchdown pass by Hugo Richard to Étienne Moisan.

The Élans quickly regained their two-point advantage on the subsequent offensive push ending with a one-yard rushing TD by their top rusher, Brad Laplante.

Their lead grew even more after a late 1-yard rushing touchdown which gave the Élans a 16-7 lead at halftime.

The dominance of the Élans continued in the start of the third quarter. Their offence initially dominated the time of possession, thereby keeping our always-dangerous Cheetahs offense on the bench.

The Élans increased their lead on its first offensive sequence in the third quarter. Their quarterback outran his defensive coverage before throwing a 16-yard pass for the team's fourth touchdown.

Élans looked set for the upset win with a commanding 23-7 lead.

However, the momentum, completely changed sides on the last play of the quarter when Alexandre Savard broke free from coverage to make a huge 56-yard touchdown catch from Hugo Richard.

Then at the start of the 4th quarter, rookie linebacker Brian Harelimana tied the game by intercepting a pass from the Garneau quarterback and returning the ball to the end-zone for a spectacular 63-yard TD interception. Brian was named as a league player of the week for his performance! See link.

Finally, the Cheetahs capitalized on another Élans error, this time a fumble by their main rusher Laplante, which set the table for the major by Hugo Richard on a one-yard run.

This established the margin of victory as the Cheetahs took the stirring 30-23 come-from-behind victory.

The Cheetahs will next play a road game as they face Notre-Dame-de-Foy on their home turf near Québec City on Saturday, September 28th at 1:00 PM. Click for directions.
