DIVISION 1 MEN'S FOOTBALL

THE VANIER COLLEGE DIVISION 1 FOOTBALL CHEETAHS SAW THEIR RECORD IMPROVE TO 7-1 ON THE SEASON WITH A HARD-FOUGHT 22-19 WIN OVER THE VIEUX-MONTREAL SPARTIATES THIS PAST SATURDAY AT THE CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL FIELD. WITH THE WIN, THE CHEETAHS REMAIN IN FIRST PLACE IN THE SOUTH-WEST DIVISION AND TIED FOR FIRST OVERALL WITH THE CHAMPLAIN-LENNOXVILLE COUGARS.

The Cheetahs opened the scoring early in the first quarter as Dev Lamour (seen at right) hauled in a 14-yard toss from quarterback Hugo Richard and Alex Vilera booted the extra point. Vilera then added a single point off a missed field goal attempt late in the first frame to give Vanier an 8-0 advantage.

The Spartiates narrowed the gap to 8-7 before the Cheetahs re-established their 8-point lead as Hugo Richard hooked up with Alexandre Savard on a 15-yard touchdown pass and Alex Vilera kicked his second of three converts with a shade over three minutes to play in the first half.

The Spartiates took their first lead of the game in the third quarter on a field goal, a blocked punt return for a touchdown and a convert. Trailing 17-15 entering the final frame, quarterback Richard went to work once again, crossing the goal line on a three-yard run. Alex Vilera chipped in with a convert to round out the scoring for the home side.

The Spartiates were credited with a safety to make the score 22-19 in the last minute of play but that was as close as they would come.

Hugo Richard propelled the Vanier offense once again, completing 17 of 28 pass attempts for 250 yards. Bryce Vieira (seen at right) led all Cheetahs with 84 yards rushing on 12 carries.
