DIV.1 MEN'S BASKETBALL CHEETAHS FINISH 7TH AT NATIONALS
DIVISION 2 MEN WIN ONE OF THREE AT REGIONAL PLAYOFFS
March 19, 2012

It was a busy week for our Vanier men’s basketball teams.

Our Division 1 team participated in the CCAA National championships in Truro, Nova Scotia. Unfortunately, we were not able to repeat as national champions.

DIVISION 1 MEN

We lost our first game to eventual champion Mohawk College of Hamilton, Ontario 101-96. We fell behind by 14 points in the 2nd quarter, but rallied to trail only 54-53 at the half.

We fell behind again by 13 in the 4th quarter, but came back again and narrowed the gap to 2 with a minute left, but we could not get over the hump and eventually lost by 5. Foul trouble and the loss of captain Brent Browne to an ankle injury early in the 2nd half were just too much to overcome.

Our Player of the Game was Ben Millaud-Meunier, who had 27 points, 8 assists, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Tevonn Walker had 15 points, Jhony Verrone had 14 and Greishe Clerjuste added 10. Malcolm Henderson contributed 9 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocked shots.

We suffered another injury in the 1st half of our next game, as 1st team league all-star Greishe Clerjuste was lost for the rest of the game with a hip injury. We lost another close high-scoring game to Red Deer College of Alberta 106-103. We had a 5-point lead with just over a minute left, but we made some costly mistakes down the stretch which allowed our opponents to come back and win. Our high scorer was again Ben Millaud-Meunier, who finished with 25 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals. Our Player of the Game was Tevonn Walker, who had 23 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Jhony Verrone had 15 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Malcolm Henderson had 14 points, 5 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Jonathan Bermillo had 10 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists.

In our last game, we fell behind early to Mount St. Vincent of Nova Scotia, but rallied to take a 32-30 lead into halftime and ultimately held on for a 71-69 victory, thereby managing to close out our season on a winning note. Our Player of the Game was Jhony Verrone with 29 points. Jhony was also named to the national tournament’s 2nd all-star team. Malcolm Henderson also had a strong game with 12 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. Greishe Clerjuste was able to come back and play, and he had a very good performance, tallying 8 points and adding 8 rebounds and 3 assists.

DIVISION 2 MEN

Our men’s Division 2 team had its regional playoffs at Dawson College this past weekend. They started off on a winning note, beating Marie-Victorin 73-59. Unfortunately they then lost their next 2 games, falling 95-78 to Montmorency and 70-67 to Ahuntsic, finishing their season.

Additional details will be added as soon as we receive them. Congratulations to Coach Rowan Barnes and the entire Division 2 Men's team for an excellent season.
