FOOTBALL CHEETAHS ELIMINATED BY SPARTIATES
DIVISION 1 HOOPSTERS IMPROVE TO A PERFECT 4-0

THE VANIER COLLEGE MEN’S FOOTBALL CHEETAHS SAW THEIR 2011 SEASON COME TO AN END THIS PAST SATURDAY WITH A 35-14 SEMI-FINAL SETBACK TO THE VIEUX-MONTREAL SPARTIATES.


MEN'S FOOTBALL

The Cheetahs held their only lead of the game after the first quarter as quarterback Hugo Richard connected with Joel Brtka on a 13-yard touchdown pass and kicker Josh MacDuffie booted his first of two converts.

Vanier then rounded their scoring for the season in the third quarter when Nick D’Andrea crossed the goal line on a 22-yard pass from Richard and MacDuffie added the convert.

Vanier’s offensive attack was paced by quarterback Hugo Richard who completed 13 of 27 pass attempts for 167 yards and Marley Patterson who rushed for 55 yards on 13 carries.

Joel Brtka topped the receiving corps with 56 yards on 5 catches. Jean-Gabriel Poulin topped the Cheetahs’ defense with 13 tackles in the setback.

MEN'S RUGBY

The Rugby Cheetahs also saw their season end on the weekend with a 46-5 semi-final loss at John Abbott.


DIVISION 1 MEN'S BASKETBALL

In Men’s Division 1 basketball action, the Cheetahs ran their record to 4-0 with a pair of wins. On Thursday, they defeated Montmorency 97-84 at home behind a huge performance by Ben Millaud-Meunier who topped Vanier with 31 points and 8 rebounds. Jhony Verrone notched 16 points as did Greishe Clerjuste who added 6 rebounds on the night. Michael Fazzolari notched 12 points and 6 boards while Tevonn Walker had 9 points and 6 rebounds and Malcolm Henderson added 7 points, 5 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.

On Sunday, the Division 1 squad improved to 4-0 with an 83-80 victory at Dawson. It was a see-saw battle that saw the Cheetahs fall behind in the first half before rallying to take a lead going into the locker room. Ben Millaud-Meunier had another tremendous game with 26 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 5 steals. Jhony Verrone also had a strong game with 14 points, 4 assists and 4 steals while Greishe Clerjuste picked up 12 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals and Malcolm Henderson contributed 8 points and 10 boards. The Cheetahs will travel to John Abbott this coming Friday to take on the Islanders. Game time is 8:30 p.m.

DIVISION 1 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The Lady Cheetahs dropped a couple of games as their early-season record fell to 3-2. In the first game of Thursdays twinbill, the ladies dropped a hard-fought 54-50 decision to the Montmorency Nomades. The Lady Cheetahs led 15-14 after the first quarter but trailed 26-19 at the half. Frédérique Potvin led Vanier with 20 points and Emily Prévost chipped in with 8 points and 7 rebounds in the loss.

The ladies also travelled to Dawson on Sunday and fell behind early on their way to a 73-61 defeat at the hands of the Lady Blues. Frédérique Potvin topped the ladies once again with 19 points, 3 rebounds and 3 helpers as Vanier narrowed the gap to 20-18 in the second quarter but this was as close as they would come. Emily Prévost tallied 13 points to go along with 7 rebounds while Kenisha Luberisse picked up 11 points and 8 rebounds. The Lady Cheetahs will also visit John Abbott on Friday. The tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

DIVISION 2 MEN'S BASKETBALL

The Men’s Division 2 Cheetahs visited Ahuntsic this past Friday and saw their record even out at 2-2 with a tough 85-81 loss. The Cheetahs trailed 23-20 after the first quarter and 45-40 at the midway mark of the contest.

Kevin Alcalde led Vanier with 21 points as the Cheetahs cut the deficit to a mere 2 points in the fourth frame but could not get any closer. Also reaching double figures in scoring were Jérémie Diluwa and Olivier Jean-Charles with 16 and 11 points respectively. The Division 2 Cheetahs will play host to Lionel-Groulx at the Vanier College Sports Complex. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
