THE VANIER COLLEGE MEN’S FOOTBALL CHEETAHS OUTLASTED THE EDOUARD-MONTPETIT LYNX 34-30 THIS PAST SATURDAY TO RAISE THEIR RECORD TO 5-4, MOVING THEM OVER THE BREAK-EVEN MARK FOR THE SEASON.
MEN'S FOOTBALL
Trailing 21-0 after the first frame, the Cheetahs comeback got started with a 2-yard touchdown run by Ryan McNamee and the first of four Josh MacDuffie converts at 4:19 of the second quarter. Marley Patterson then completed an 8 play – 61 yard drive when he rushed 11 yards for a touchdown at the 11:01 mark. A last second Edouard-Montpetit touchdown gave the Lynx a 27-14 advantage at the half.
The Cheetahs then narrowed the gap to 27-21 in the third quarter when quarterback Hugo Richard finished off an 8 play – 90 yard drive with a one yard touchdown run and kicker MacDuffie booted his third extra point of the afternoon. The Cheetahs kept the momentum in the fourth quarter with another 90 yard drive that took 11 plays, culminating with a 2-yard touchdown run by Nick D’Andrea and MacDuffie’s fourth convert, giving Vanier their first lead of the day 28-27. A Lynx field goal gave them a 30-28 lead with just under four minutes to play. However, the Cheetahs marched down the field for 6 plays totaling 53 yards that ended with Marley Patterson crossing the goal-line for the second time on an 18-yard sprint with only 29 seconds to play in the fourth frame. Vanier’s two point convert attempt failed but the Cheetahs hung on for a hard-fought 34-30 victory.
Vanier’s offensive attack was paced by quarterback Hugo Richard who completed 14 of 29 pass attempts for 257 yards and Marley Patterson who rushed for an amazing 170 yards on 21 carries. Joel Brtka topped the receiving corps with 83 yards on 4 catches. James Reinlein led the defense with 6 tackles, including a sack, while Brendan Coffey and James Donald had 5 and 4.5 tackles respectively and Clément Lebreux notched 2 sacks and 4.5 total tackles.
The Cheetahs complete the regular portion of their schedule this coming Saturday, October 29th, at 1:00 p.m. at the Concordia University Football Field when they play host to F.X. Garneau (6-3) who were victorious over Vanier by a 29-18 score in their only meeting this season to date on September 17th.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SOCCER
On the soccer pitch, the Lady Soccer Cheetahs season ended this past Saturday with a 1-0 quarter-final overtime loss to Bois-de-Boulogne in an exciting contest.
Meanwhile, the Men’s Soccer Cheetahs were doubled 4-2 in their regular season against St. Lambert. Massimo Tartaglia and Theodoros Tzikalagias found the back of the net in the setback. The great news is that due to the team's strong performance during the regular season, the Cheetahs have qualifieed for the Provincial playoffs and will face Ahuntsic in the quarter-finals on Friday Oct. 28th at 6:30 PM right next to Cégep Champlain St. Lambert at Seaway Park #3 (900 Riverside drive, St. Lambert) See map.
FLAG FOOTBALL
The Lady Flag-Football Cheetahs completed their first season after a two-year hiatus with a 2-7-1 record with a 41-0 blanking against Terrebonne this past Saturday.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S RUGBY
The Rugby Cheetahs were swept by the undefeated John Abbott Islanders this past Sunday in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue as the Lady Cheetahs (1-4) were blanked 50-0 and the Men (3-2) were defeated 36-11. Both squads will face the Dawson Blues at home on Sunday in the final game of the regular season. Game times are 12:00 and 1:30 p.m.
MEN'S DIV. 1 BASKETBALL
In Men’s Division 1 basketball action, the Cheetahs opened the 2011-12 regular season with a convincing 76-48 triumph over Champlain-St. Lambert last Thursday at the Vanier College Sports Complex on a night that featured a banner raising ceremony saluting the men’s Provincial and National Championships from last season. (You can see the 1-minute ceremony on youtube.) The Cheetahs jumped out to a 41-16 at the half and never looked back. Greishe Clerjuste led Vanier with 15 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Jhony Verrone also had a strong game with 13 points while Ben Millaud added 10 points in the win. Rookie Tevonn Walker put forth a tremendous effort with 8 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals and a blocked shot. Malcolm Henderson, recently recovered from a series of injuries, contributed 7 points and 5 boards in his first game back.
On Friday night, the Division 1 squad edged Seneca College from Toronto 78-74 in an exhibition game at Vanier College. Greishe Clerjuste had another big game with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Tevonn Walker and Jhony Verrone contributed 18 points apiece and 9 and 5 rebounds respectively in the win. The Cheetahs (1-0 in the regular season) will visit Ahuntsic (1-0) this coming Friday. The tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
WOMEN'S DIV. 1 BASKETBALL
The Lady Cheetahs started their regular season with a lopsided 84-59 over Champlain St. Lambert in the first game of Thursday’s double-header. Futoumata Sylla paced the Lady Cheetahs with 16 points while Emily Prévost and Kennisha Luberisse tallied 15 points apiece and Frédérique Potvin added 13 points in a well-balanced offensive attack.
The ladies then ran their record to a perfect 2-0 with a 61-46 home win over Trois-Rivières on Sunday. Emily Prévost netted 15 points and Frédérique Potvin added 14 points in a game that Vanier fell behind briefly in the third quarter before pulling away for the victory. Kennisha Luberisse notched a “double-double” with 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Cheetahs, who will now travel to Nouvelles-Frontières (0-1) in Gatineau on Friday. Game time is 8:00 p.m.
MEN'S DIV. 2 BASKETBALL
The Men’s Division 2 Cheetahs split a pair of games last weekend in Gatineau. On Friday night, Paul Marchand-Segui and Jeffrey Duah each tallied 14 points as the Cheetahs defeated Heritage College 80-68. Also reaching double-figures in scoring were Tyree Barrett with 13 points and Olivier Jean-Charles with 11 points in a game that Vanier led from start to finish.
Saturday night featured a see-saw battle against Nouvelles-Frontières that the Cheetahs eventually lost by a single point, 76-75. Jeffrey Duah and Kevin Alcalde topped Vanier with 19 and 15 points respectively. The Division 2 squad plays it home-opener against Collège Brébeuf (0-1) this coming Friday. The tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
