DIVISION 1 MEN'S BASKETBALL
After the women’s game, we had a ceremony raising the men’s Provincial and National banners from last season. The pride in those accomplishments was evident on the faces of the entire men’s team, and it showed in their performance in the game that followed. Our men had lost to Champlain St. Lambert by 31 only a couple of weeks earlier in the pre-season Hagen tournament, but when it counted, they would make sure the result was very different.
The game stayed close for the opening couple of minutes, but after trailing 5-4, we went on a 12-0 run to take a 16-5 lead, and never looked back. We closed the first quarter up 23-8, and continued to pour in on in the 2nd quarter. We held Champlain scoreless the first 6 minutes of the period, and took a commanding 41-16 lead into halftime. Our visitors managed to cut the deficit to 17 early in the 3rd quarter, but we re-established our dominance and led 65-35 after 3. The 4th quarter was really a formality, as we coasted to a 76-48 victory.
This was a game where it is difficult to pick out our top performers, as the entire team played so well, but our leading scorer was Greishe Clerjuste with 15 points (seen at right), and he added 8 rebounds,3 assists and 2 steals in a terrific all-round performance. Jhony Verrone (also at right) had 13 points and was perfect from the field and the foul line, making all 5 of his field goal attempts and both of his free throws. Ben Millaud had 10 points.
Rookie Tevonn Walker made an immediate impression, playing with great energy and determination and contributing 8 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals and a blocked shot. Malcolm Henderson, coming off a series of injuries and with only 1 practice under his belt, was a force inside and added 7 points and 5 rebounds in limited minutes.
Special thanks go out to Keith Coffin, who gave the guys a tremendous motivational speech before the game. It was very inspiring and obviously quite effective. |
