October 18, 2011

THE VANIER COLLEGE MEN’S FOOTBALL TEAM SURRENDERED A LATE FOURTH QUARTER TOUCHDOWN AS THEY SUFFERED A 28-21 DEFEAT AT THE HANDS OF THE VIEUX-MONTREAL SPARTIATES THIS PAST SATURDAY AT THE CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL FIELD.

MEN'S FOOTBALL

The Cheetahs opened the scoring at the 5:17 mark of the first quarter when Mark Ferraro hauled in a 33-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Hugo Richard (seen at right) and kicker Josh MacDuffie booted his first of three converts on the day. The Spartiates knotted the score at 7-7 in the first frame and pulled ahead 10-7 in the second quarter before Junior Luke crossed the goal-line on a one yard run (see photo at right) and MacDuffie’s second extra point of the contest gave the home team a 14-10 advantage. A Spartiate single made the score 14-11 at the midway point.

Vieux-Montréal tallied 10 unanswered points in the third quarter to build a 21-14 lead but the Cheetahs responded to the challenge in the fourth period when quarterback Richard hooked up with Adam Bailey on a 19-yard touchdown pass and MacDuffie’s third convert. Unfortunately, this was not enough as the visitors rallied for the win.

The Cheetahs were led offensively by Hugo Richard who completed 10 of 24 pass attempts for 163 yards while gaining 42 yards on the ground on 4 carries. Mark Ferraro topped the Vanier receiving corps with 4 catches for 68 yards.
