BUSY SEASON FOR VANIER ATHLETICS
LADY BASKETBALL CHEETAHS CONTINUE SUCCESSFUL PRE-SEASON

THE VANIER COLLEGE INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC TEAMS WERE QUITE BUSY THIS PAST WEEK.

WOMEN'S DIVISION 2 SOCCER

On the soccer pitch, the Lady Soccer Cheetahs completed the regular portion of their schedule with a 3-3-0 record, good for second place in Section A, despite a 4-0 blanking to Maisonneuve last Thursday. The ladies will now prepare for their semi-final match on Saturday, October 22nd.


MEN'S DIVISON 1 SOCCER

Meanwhile, the Men’s Soccer Cheetahs now sport a 1-4-2 mark after a 1-0 setback to Ahuntsic last Tuesday and a 1-1 draw with Dawson on Friday. Theodoros Tzikalagias was the lone Vanier goal scorer. The Cheetahs play a pair of games at Catalogna this coming weekend as they take on Dawson (3-1-2) on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Lionel Groulx (2-1-1) on Sunday at 3:00 p.m.


FLAG FOOTBALL

The Lady Flag-Football Cheetahs played a double-header this past Saturday and came away with a 0-1-1 record. In the opener, the Lady Cheetahs scored with one play left in the game to earn a 27-27 draw with Grandby. Emilie Belanger scored two touchdowns while Kelsey Benoit and Kayla Normandin each crossed the goal line once. The Lady Cheetahs were then defeated 45-12 by Shawinigan in the nightcap. Emilie Belanger notched both Vanier touchdowns in the loss. The Lady Cheetahs (2-5-1) will visit Bois-de-Boulogne (2-6-0) on Friday night. The kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.


PRE-SEASON BASKETBALL

In exhibition basketball action, Lady Cheetahs posted a perfect 3-0 record against out-of-province schools this past weekend. On Friday, the ladies hammered Sheridan College 110-42. Frédérique Potvin led the Vanier scoring parade with 24 points while Shabeka Taylor had a strong outing with 17 points. Emily Prévost posted a “double-double” with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Fatou Sylla and Neyla Joseph were also in double-figures in scoring with 15 and 10 points respectively.

On Saturday, the Lady Cheetahs defeated Humber College 74-46 behind Emily Prévost’s 16 points. Also reaching double-figures in scoring were Janie Vigneault with 13 points and Catherine Desbiens and Fatou Sylla with 10 points apiece in the win.

The Lady Cheetahs then completed the Thanksgiving Weekend sweep by outlasting Mount St. Vincent University 62-57 on Sunday. Emily Prévost recorded another “double-double” with 19 points and 10 rebounds while Frédérique Potvin and Kennisha Luberisse contributed 14 and 13 points respectively in the victory. Vanier will now travel to Fredericton, New Brunswick, this coming weekend to participate in the University Hoops Showcase.

The Men’s Division 1 Basketball Cheetahs posted a 1-4 record with some very close and competitive games at the Hagen Tournament at Dawson College this past weekend. On Friday, the men faced off against Algonquin College and were defeated 80-74 despite a 28 point performance by Ben Millaud-Meunier and 15 points from Tevonn Walker. The Cheetahs were then edged 79-75 by Humber College in their second game on Friday. Tevonn Walker topped Vanier with 23 points while Malcolm Henderson netted 12 points and Jonathan Bermillo had 10 points in the setback.

The Cheetahs then split their games on Saturday. They dropped a tough 69-65 decision to Sheridan College in the first game before defeating Mount St. Vincent 95-87 in the nightcap. Jhony Verrone, Greishe Clerjuste and Jonathan Bermillo all put forth strong efforts. The Cheetahs then completed the tournament with a 77-44 loss to Champlain St. Lambert. Tevonn Walker was the top scorer for Vanier with 9 points. The Cheetahs will play in the Durham College in Oshawa, Ontario, this coming weekend.

The Men’s Division 2 Basketball Cheetahs will take part in the Fall Festival Tournament at Collège Edouard-Montpetit this coming weekend.
