THE CHEETAHS ARE THE CHAMPS!
BACK-UP PIVOT LACASSE LEADS VANIER PAST VIEUX-MONTREAL
November 16, 2010

QUARTERBACK BENOIT LACASSE COMPLETED 10 OF 21 PASS ATTEMPTS FOR 277 YARDS AND 4 TOUCHDOWN PASSES TO LEAD THE VANIER CHEETAHS TO THE BOL D’OR CHAMPIONSHIP WITH AN EMOTIONAL 31-28 TRIUMPH OVER LONG-TIME RIVALS THE VIEUX-MONTREAL SPARTIATES THIS PAST SATURDAY IN LENNOXVILLE.

Vanier jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the 5:45 mark of the first quarter when sure-handed receiver Matthew Norzil hauled in a 57-yard pass from Benoit Lacasse and kicker Josh MacDuffie booted his first of 4 converts on the day.

A Spartiates field goal narrow the score to 7-3 before Lacasse hooked up with Alexandre Piché for a 46-yard touchdown pass late in the first period to give Vanier a 14-3 advantage.

The Cheetahs then extended their lead to 21-3 early in the second quarter when Norzil once again crossed the goal-line, this time on a 26-yard toss from Lacasse. Vieux-Montréal closed the gap to 21-13 with a converted touchdown and a field goal.

Vanier then went up by 15 points at 13:08 of the second frame as Lacasse found Piché from 59 yards out.

Reliable kicker Josh MacDuffie nailed a 15-yard field goal for the only scoring of the third quarter to give the Cheetahs a 31-13 edge.

The Spartiates were not done, however, as they scored a touchdown with a two-point convert at 6:21 and a converted touchdown at 9:58 of the final frame to move to within 3 points but that was as close as they would get.

The Cheetahs were led on the offense by quarterback Benoit Lacasse (Cheetahs Player of the Game) and by receivers Alexandre Piché and Matthew Norzil, who notched 4 catches for 124 yards and 3 receptions for 99 yards respectively.

Alex Vilera (seen at right) paced the Vanier running attack with 13 carries for 62 yards while Jesse Lacle rushed 12 times for 61 yards. The Cheetahs defense was lead by Jean-Sébastien Blanc with 7 tackles including a sack and Anthony Thompson with 6 tackles.

The Cheetahs completed their season with a tremendous 11-1 overall record.
