Marie-Eve Martin

At the CCAA Nationals Awards Ceremony on March 18th, Marie-Eve Martin received the following 3 awards:

- CCAA 1st team All-Canadian
- CCAA Academic All-Canadian
- CCAA Player of the Year

Marie-Eve is in her third and final year at Vanier. She previously won the FQSE Rookie of the Year Award in her first season and was subsequently named to the FQSE 1st All-Star Team as well as to the CCAA 1st team All-Canadian in her second season. (See photo below)

Her honours in this, her third season included:
FQSE: 1st Team All-Star and League MVP (Quebec)
CCAA: February Player of the Month (Canada)

This is tremendous news as Marie-Eve (or "Marty" as she's known to her friends and fans) becomes the first Basketball Player of the Year in all of Vanier’s history. The only other Vanier Athletics alum who ever was named as a CCAA Player of the Year in their sport was Chris Stathopoulos who won in 1996 while with the Men's Soccer Cheetahs. The other Vanier winners of awards on the national level were all coaches: Keith Coffin (Men's Basketball) 1989, Zoran Jankovic (Men's Soccer) 1996, and Mireille Beland (Women's Basketball) 1998.

Marty is seen (at right) in a photo displaying her great drive, taken at last year's National Championships where the team won a Bronze Medal.

Other Lady Basketball Cheetahs who were previously named as CCAA All-Canadians were Eva Samore in 1993, Debbie Ruiz in 2000, Nadia Roc in 2005, and Anneth Him-Lazarenko and Marie-Eve Martin together in 2008.

Needless to say, Marie-Eve had a great run during her years here at Vanier. She played on the Canadian Championship team of 2006-07 and was also a member of the Provincial Champion 2007-08 team.

Apart from this honour from the CCAA, Marty also won the Provincial League MVP Award this year as well as a position on the 2008-2009 League First All Star team. She had also previously won the League Rookie of the Year Award in the 2006-2007 season.

Head Coach Ruby Viray (seen at left with Marty after winning the 2007 Provincials) had this to say about her, "I can only be considered lucky to have had the opportunity to work with a person such as Marty. Because of who she is, success will always follow her. She has taught me a lot."

In one of our favourite photos of Marty (at right) we see her jumping into the arms of team therapist Noor Boutros just after the buzzer at the 2008 Provincial Championships.

In an announcement made on the next day, the CCAA pronounced Marty an ACADEMIC All Canadian as well, which is one of the highest achievements awarded by the CCAA. To win this prestigious honour, you must have a minimum 80% average (which she exceeded by far) and be named to your conference All Star team.

The Social Science student and team captain has yet to choose her university; however for someone with national-level credentials such as hers, Marty's options should me numerous. All of us at Vanier will miss her a great deal and we wish her the best in her future endeavours.

PREVIOUS AWARD FOR CCAA PLAYER OF THE MONTH FOR FEBRUARY

PRESS RELEASE: CCAA Athletes of the Month Have Been Named

(Cornwall, Ont. – March 5, 2009)  Each year at the end of February the CCAA honours men’s and women’s basketball student-athletes. These athletes are selected as the top athlete of their gender in their respective CCAA conferences. Among the CCAA Basketball athletes of the month was Vanier College's Marie-Eve Martin. As captain of her Cheetahs, Marie-Eve has been one of the main reasons for the success of the Vanier women’s basketball team this year. Martin does it all for the Cheetahs, whether it’s scoring, rebounding, playing tough inside, or coming up with big shots from beyond the arch. A quality that all great players have is consistency and consistent play is what Marie-Eve brings to the floor each and every game. (End of Press Release)
