        BASKETBALL UPDATE

In a thrilling ending to the AAA Women's Provincial Basketball Championships, The Lady Cheetahs held off a tough comeback mounted by the team from Collège Montmorency during the Finals and prevailed with a stirring 66-60 victory before a boisterous home crowd at the Vanier Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon. Congratulations to Coach Ruby Viray and the entire team for repeating their provincial championship from last year.

Marie-Ève Martin

The Player of the Game was Anneth Him-Lazarenko while Marie-Ève Martin contributed 20 points in the win in the finals.

Marie-Ève was the Player of the Game in the team's 84-70 semi-final victory over Collège Édouard-Montpetit on Saturday in which she scored a remarkable 27 points to help send the team to the finals. She was then named Tournament MVP after the finals. Way to go, Marty!

Arianne Duchesne scored 15 points in the finals while Magalie Beaulieu had 13 points and Anneth Him Lazarenko had 11.

Next, the Lady Cheetahs will defend their current national title at the Canadian National Basketball Championships which will be held at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Truro, NS from March 14-16.

In their first game on Saturday, apart from Marie-Ève Martin's awesome 27-point output, we also had four team members scoring in the double digits: Anneth Him-Lazarenko with 15, Arianne Duchesne with 14, Anne-Marie Prophete with 12 and Magalie Beaulieu with 10.

Academic Award winner

At the League Awards Banquet held on Saturday night, Anneth Him-Lazarenko and Marie-Ève Martin were named as members on both the first All-Star Team as well as on the All-Canadian Team. Arianne Duchesne was named to the Second All-Star Team.

Also at the banquet, our very own Julie Manacas received an Academic Award for her outstanding scholastic results. Congratulations go out to all winners.

Hernst Laroche
On Friday evening, the AAA Men's Basketball Cheetahs' season ended after a close 73-68 loss to the Édouard-Montpetit Lynx. The men fought back from a ten-point deficit in the fourth quarter to reduce the lead to one before the Lynx pulled away for the win. Anaclet Mulumba Mbayi earned Player-of-the-Game honors with a 10 point – 12 rebound performance. Hernst Laroche, who was named to the First All-Star team, netted 11 points to go along with 5 assists and 3 steals.

Thomas Pearson and Holando Meus chalked up 11 points each and Mike Flannery added 10 in the loss. Congratulations to Coach Andy Hertzog and the team for a fine season. Game photos are below.

Finally, hearty congratulations go out to Athletics Coordinator Mireille Béland and to Sports Complex Manager Linda Macpherson as well as to all the other organizers and many volunteers who made this huge event such a tremendous success. A special shout-out goes to stalwart volunteers Rick Yuen and Dany Brown, to AA Men's Basketball coach Rowan Barnes who was announcer at 4 games, and of course to Donny Insogna, the "Voice of the Cheetahs" who did his usual great job of announcing at all of the other 8 tournament games.
