The Women’s AAA Basketball Cheetahs took Sherbrooke by storm this past weekend and came away with Vanier College’s first ever women’s Provincial championship.

In the first game on Saturday morning, the Lady Cheetahs held a 31-29 lead at halftime before exploding in the second half on their way to an 86-59 triumph over Ste. Foy. Arianne Duchesne paced Vanier with 22 points and Anneth Him Lazarenko tallied 16 points in the convincing win. Marie-Eve Martin netted 14 points and Kristin Portwine, playing with a knee injury, added 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Cheetahs.

On Sunday in the championship final, the ladies once again started slow as they fell behind at the half 26-25 against Edouard-Montpetit. They then rebounded with a dominating third quarter to give them a 20-point advantage as they outlasted their opponents 72-59 for the title. Heather Eason led Vanier with 15 points while Arianne Duchesne and Marie-Eve Martin contributed 13 points apiece in this milestone win. Kristin Portwine had 10 points and 7 rebounds and Magalie Beaulieu chipped in with 9 points, 3 steals and 3 assists for the top-ranked Lady Cheetahs, who are now the favorites at the National Championships which will be held from March 15-17 at Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton, Alberta.

Congratulations go out to coaches Ruby Viray, Tina Fasone and Mai-Anh Nguyen and the Lady Cheetahs for an inspiring performance.

The Lady Cheetahs received some well-deserved recognition at the AAA awards banquet. Anneth Him Lazarenko was named to the first all-star team while Marie-Eve Martin was selected to the second all-star team as well as being honored as the league’s Rookie-of-the-Year.

Ruby Viray was Coach-of-the-Year and Kristin Portwine was Vanier’s Student Athlete award winner as she posted the highest academic average on her team.

In Men’s Provincial action, the AAA Cheetahs dropped a 90-79 decision to Montmorency. The Cheetahs were behind by 8 points at the half and 12 points in the fourth quarter before a furious comeback put them up by 2 points with 4 minutes remaining in regulation time. Unfortunately, Vanier could not hold on as they saw their season come to an end. Lerry Williams held the hot hand for the Cheetahs with 19 points. Ronald Vanel and Hernst Laroche were also in double figures in scoring with 13 and 12 points respectively. At the AAA awards banquet on Saturday evening, Michael Flannery was Vanier’s Student Athlete award winner as he posted the highest academic average on his team. Hernst Laroche was honored as the league Rookie-of-the-Year, a sign of the bright future ahead for Coach Andy Hertzog’s AAA squad.


Elsewhere, the Men’s AA Cheetahs captured an exciting 93-89 overtime road win at Ahuntsic last night, in a game rescheduled from Friday due to the snowstorm. The Cheetahs trailed for most of the game and were down 7 points with less than a minute to play before embarking on a thrilling comeback for the victory. Pierre Monuma put forth a tremendous effort with 32 points while Marc Chery played a terrific game as he recorded 26 points. Vanier (11-6) will play host to the first place Dawson Blues (14-2) this coming Friday at the Vanier College Sports Complex. The tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
