MEN'S AND WOMEN'S RUGBY TEAMS WIN
TEAM SPORTSMANSHIP AWARDS

ANNOUNCEMENT MADE BY ARSCIM AT SEASON END AFTER LADY CHEETAHS
WIN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP AND MEN
LOSE IN A NAIL-BITER IN SEMIFINALS

November 21, 2005

I am extremely pleased to announce that both Vanier men and women have won the league’s Éthique Sportive awards. Athletics Coordinator Linda Macpherson and I have had numerous discussions on rugby and the roll the coaches and players must take to maintain discipline and sportsmanship in a very rough contact sport. This means a lot to me that the other teams in our leagues felt we deserved this recognition.

Despite our obvious pride in the Lady Cheetahs championship win, the men’s team as well deserves a huge share of our congratulations. They did just as much work as the women in the pre-season to prepare for Vanier, and played as hard and with as much heart.

Though the men lost a nail-biter to Dawson in the semi-finals, they did finish first place in their division, a fact that also needs to be shared with all.

It’s still all just sinking in…..the women are league champs, playoff champs, team sportsmanship awards and have 5 players who are League All-Stars. The men are division champs, team sportsmanship awards and have 3 League all-stars.

There are no words to convey how proud I am of them all

LAST GAME DESCRIPTIONS:

The Vanier College Women’s Rugby Team defeated the powerhouse John Abbott Islanders on penalty kicks on November 6th to capture the League Championship.

John Abbott scored first and was leading 5-0 until Aly Caza scored a try to knot the score at 5-5.

The score remained tied throughout the game and two overtime periods before being decided on penalty kicks. Caza then secured the win on her second kick to give the Cheetahs the title.

The Men’s Rugby Cheetahs weren’t as fortunate as they were defeated 11-6 by Dawson in semi-final play on November 2nd.
