It was a fantastic conclusion to the Mens AA Basketball season this past weekend at Ahuntsic College as, for only the second time in Vanier College history, the Cheetahs captured the gold medal at the Provincial Championships.
In the quarter-final game on Friday, the Cheetahs routed F.X. Garneau from Quebec City 86-44. Vanier got a dunk right off the opening tip and never looked back. Dany Charlery paced the Cheetahs offensive attack with 17 points in the win.
In Saturdays semi-final, coach Benji Vidiceks squad took an early 13-point lead against Ste. Foy. Some foul trouble enabled Ste. Foy to narrow the gap to two points at half-time. The Cheetahs then took control of the second frame and coasted to a 83-59 triumph. Edelain Theofile led the way for Vanier with 16 points, while Dany Charlery netted 12 and Ashley Oziegbe and Victor Paskal tallied 11 and 9 points respectively in the win.
As impressive as these two performances were, the Cheetahs saved their best for last the gold medal confrontation against previously undefeated Dawson College. The men had lost 74-73 on a last-second shot to Dawson in the Regional finals two weeks ago. Determined to overcome that heart-breaking defeat, the men got off to a bad start and trailed 8-2 early in the contest. Vanier then overcame this deficit and dominated the rest of the game. The led by 10 points after the first quarter and extended that lead to 23 at the half before posting an exciting 102-70 victory for the gold medal. Edelain Theofile was the Cheetahs top scorer once again with 25 points. Andrew Bergeron had a tremendous game coming off the bench as he notched 20 points. Dany Charlery netted 17 points and Victor Paskal also played very well as he was instrumental in breaking Dawsons press.
Congratulations goes out to the entire Vanier College Mens AA Cheetahs team as well as the coaching staff: Bengi Vidicek, Bill Saad, Julia Marta, Fiso Khumalo and Mark Miller. The gold medal performance by the AA Cheetahs capped off an incredible month for Vanier College Basketball as each of the three teams brought home Provincial Medals.
At the Provincial AAA Championships March 8-9 at Edouard-Montpetit, the Womens AAA cagers upset #2 ranked Dawson 74-67 to win the bronze medal while the Mens AAA Cheetahs outlasted Champlain St. Lambert 91-78 to take home a bronze medal of their own. The Lady Cheetahs Dranadia Roc was named to the 2nd all-star team at the league awards banquet while Jerreh Saidybah and Damian Buckley of the Mens squad were named to the 2nd and 1st all-star teams respectively. Buckley was also honoured as an ALL-CANADIAN.
