It was a successful weekend for Vanier basketball teams, who all played their last regular season games of 2017. On Friday evening, our Div. 2 Men’s Basketball Cheetahs took a huge 125-87 home victory over Rosemont, improving to 5 wins, 3 losses. Then on Sunday, our Division 1 teams hosted a home doubleheader with Ste-Foy. In the first game, the Lady Cheetahs lost 66-55, but in the second half, the Div. 1 Men took a solid 95-65 over Ste-Foy to improve their season record to an awesome 7-1, good to remain in first place in the league.

Here is the full report of weekend games from Men’s Division 1 Head Coach Andy Hertzog:

All our Vanier basketball teams played their last games of the first semester this weekend.

Our men’s Division 2 team got things started Friday night with an offensive explosion, beating Rosemont 125-87 at home. The win brings their league record to 5-3.

On Sunday our Division 1 teams hosted Ste Foy. In the first game, our women kept things close most of the game, but ended up losing 65-55 to the Dynamiques, dropping their league record to 2-5. Our leading scorer was Meagan Charbonneau, who had 14 points. Tatiana Toledo had 9 points and Jessica Salanon added 8.

The second half of the doubleheader was quite a different story. Our men’s Division 1 team took control early and cruised to a 95-65 victory, improving our league record to 7-1. We finish the first semester in first place (Brebeuf is also 7-1 but we beat them head to head). We had 4 players score in double figures, led by Nginyu Ngala with 19 points. Haris Elezovic had 16 points and 9 rebounds. J.F. Daho had a “double double” with 14 points and 10 boards, and he added 5 assists for good measure. Steeve Joseph added 10 points.

Our men’s Division 1 tea will take part in the Sun Youth Holiday Tournament December 15-17. Our first game will be against Thetford Gold on Friday, December 15 at 9:00 PM. Our next game will be against Ottawa Next Level on Saturday, December 16 at 12:00 noon. Please note that both of those games will be played at the Concordia University gym (Loyola campus) and not at Sun Youth.

Our men’s Division 1 basketball team has now moved up to number 3 in the national rankings.

The following week after the Sun Youth Holiday Tournament, we will be playing in a tournament in Springfield, Massachusetts from December 21-23.

Please note that we will be having open gym scrimmages on Thursday, December 28 and Friday, December 29 at 6:00 PM, for anyone who wants to run off their holiday meal or who just wants to come by and say hello. All are welcome.

Best regards,
Andy Hertzog
