We have two games to report on from this weekend. On Friday evening, our Division 1 Men’s Soccer Cheetahs played their season opener on the road against Ahuntsic, Provincial Champs from the past 2 years, and unfortunately Vanier lost 5-2. You can read more on this game further down this page. But the big news of the weekend was Saturday evening’s Men’s Football matchup VS Garneau in Vanier’s home opener. Read on for all the details.
DIVISION 1 MEN’S FOOTBALL
On Saturday evening, our Division 1 Men’s Football Cheetahs took their 1-0 record and played their home-opener against the visiting team from Garneau, who also came in with an equal 1-0 record. The last time we faced Garneau, it was at home in the last game of the 2017 season, and we came out with a 31-17 win to finish the regular season with a 7-2 record.
Near the end of the first quarter, Garneau scored a touchdown to go up 7-0. But then in the final five minutes of the 2nd quarter, the Cheetahs tied it 7-7 on a TD by Ben Labrosse who ran the ball in after it had been intercepted by Kaylyn St-Cyr who then lateralled the ball to Ben. Then with 1:43 to go in the half, Réginald Prophète hauled in an 18-yard TD pass from QB Daniel Sananes, which put us up 14-7. A field goal from Vanier kicker Adam Mahrouse and a single by Garneau made it 17-8 at the half.
In the 3rd quarter, running back Kevin Foster had a massive 31-yard TD run, which put us safely up 24-8. In the final quarter, Vanier scored an early safety and then Adam Mahrouse kicked another field goal increasing our lead to 29-8. With less than a minute to go, Garneau scored a TD and made a 2-point conversion, but it was clearly too little too late, and Vanier held on for a big 29-16 home-opening victory which greatly pleased all our Vanier supporters who came out for the game.
Offensively, the Cheetahs were led by QB Daniel Sananes who completed 13 of 24 passes for 1 TD and 0 interceptions. His favourite target was receiver Cedric Fisk Casault who caught 4 passes for 94 yards. Our top two rushers were Kevin Foster (17 carries for 118 yards including 1 for a touchdown) and QB Daniel Sananes (who showed his awesome scrambling capabilities by rushing 9 times for 72 yards). Also, kicker Adam Mahrouse converted on all 3 Vanier touchdowns, plus he was successful on both of his 2 field goals attempts. Defensively, the Cheetahs were led by Costa Papanikolaou (7 solo and 5 assisted tackles), Dawson Pierre (7 solo and 2 assisted tackles), and Ben Labrosse (6 solo and 1 assisted tackle), as well as by DB Kaylyn St-Cyr who had 3 interceptions during the game.
THIS JUST IN: For the 2nd straight week, a Vanier Cheetah has been named as the league’s top defensive player of the week. Congratulations to Kaylyn St-Cyr whose 3 interceptions in the win over Garneau helped seal the deal for this honour.

DIVISION 1 MEN’S SOCCER
On Friday evening, the Division 1 Men’s Soccer Cheetahs opened their season on the road in a game played at Centre Claude-Robillard against some very tough opponents from Collège Ahuntsic, who are the Provincial Champions of not only last year, but the season before as well. In the end, Ahuntsic pulled off a 5-2 win before a boisterous home crowd. Scoring details are not yet available. The Men’s Soccer Cheetahs hope to improve their record when they next play another road game, this time against Lionel-Groulx on Friday, September 7th at 7:00 PM. Go Cheetahs!!
