On Friday, evening, our Division 1 Women’s and Men’s basketball teams played a road doubleheader vs our perennial rivals from Dawson College. The first game saw our Lady Cheetahs facing the heavily-favoured Lady Blues (ranked 2nd in all of Canada) and although they lost, they gave it their all, with the final score being 65-48. The Men’s game, however, lived up to all the usual excitement one expects at a Vanier/Dawson matchup. After a hard-fought see-saw battle, we were leading by 8 with 3 minutes to go, but then Dawson sank three 3-point shots in quick succession to take the lead. But with 1 second left on the clock, a clutch Vanier basket tied the game and we were heading for overtime. Given this second breath of life, the Cheetahs poured it on and finally emerged with a thrilling 72-66 OT win! The clutch victory improved their season record to 11-4 and they are now very well positioned heading into the playoffs after they finish up their regular season with a home game VS John Abbott on Friday, February 23rd at 9:00 PM. The Lady Cheetahs open the night at 7:00 PM in a home game VS Trois-Rivieres. Note: as this will be the last home game of the regular season, Vanier will be holding a special ceremony honouring our departing senior players. Finally, on Sunday afternoon, our Division 2 Men’s basketball team played a road game against first-place Montmorency, and they lost 105-80, dropping their season record to 8-4, good for 3rd place in the league.

Here is the full game report of Friday’s action provided to us by our Division 1 Men’s Head Coach Andy Hertzog:

Our Division 1 basketball teams went downtown last night to play a doubleheader on the road against rival Dawson.

In the first game, our women’s team gave a great effort against the undefeated Blues, ranked 2nd in Canada, but finally could not match their firepower. The first quarter went back and forth, with Dawson taking a 17-13 lead at the end. Dawson led 30-20 at the half and opened up a 21-point lead going into the final period. We closed the gap to 11 I the 4th quarter but could get no closer, losing by a score of 65-48. Our leading scorers were Catherine Destin with 14 points and Mikitshi Basambombo with 12. Debora Aboagye added 8 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.

The second half of the doubleheader was a thrilling affair befitting of the Vanier-Dawson rivalry. The first quarter remained close, and we led 16-15 at the end of the period. We went cold in the second quarter, scoring only 6 points, and our hosts grabbed a 30-22 lead at halftime. We just couldn’t hit shots in the first half (20% from the field, 18% from the 3-point line and 37.5% from the foul line). Whatever we told the guys at halftime did not seem to work, as Dawson opened up an 18-point advantage midway through the 3rd period. But, we then started chipping away at the deficit and trailed only 43-37 going into the final period. We continued our comeback in the 4th quarter, and took the lead a few minutes in. We actually led by 8 with under 3 minutes remaining, and it looked like we were in control, but Dawson hit 3 straight 3’s to re-take a 1-point lead with under a minute remaining. We missed our next shot and eventually had to foul Dawson with 11 seconds left. They made their first foul shot, but missed the second. We got the rebound and pushed the ball up court. Nginyu Ngala found Josh Koulamallah under the Blues basket for a layup with 1 second remaining, and we sent the game into overtime. We took control right from the opening of the overtime period, and despite a few missed foul shots, we went on to win 72-66.

Our leading scorers were Nginyu Ngala and Karim Mané, each of whom had 16 points. Karim added 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Josh Koulamalllah added 9 points and 8 boards. Pier-Olivier Racine had 9 rebounds, 5 points, 2 assists and 2 blocked shots.

Our Division 1 basketball teams complete their regular season next Friday night, February 23, at home against John Abbott. It is Senior Night, and we will be honouring our departing seniors. The women’s game starts at 7:00 PM and the men’s game follows at 9:00 PM.

Our men’s Division 2 team had a 105-80 road loss to first-place Montmorency on Sunday, February 18. They will next play another road game at Ahuntsic this coming Friday, February 23 at 9:00 PM and then they will host Marie-Victorin the following Sunday, February 25, at 1:00 PM.

Come out and support your Cheetahs !
