Our Div.1 Men’s Basketball Cheetahs played twice this weekend, while our Div.1 Women and Div.2 Men’s Hoopsters each played once. Highlights included two wins for our undefeated Div.1 Men’s team and a win for our Div.1 Women’s squad. Also, our Women’s Volleyball and our varsity Cheerleading squads both competed as well.

DIVISION 1 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
On Friday evening, our Division 1 Basketball teams played a home doubleheader VS two different teams. In the first game our Lady Cheetahs faced Trois-Rivières and they emerged with a hard-fought 52-40 victory, improving their season record to 1-5. The team had a solid defensive performance, with Leahana John leading the attack with 15 points. They next play a road game against Champlain Lennoxville on Friday, November 30th, starting at 7:00 PM.

On Friday’s game, it was also official signing day for five Div.1 Women’s recruits. We are very excited to welcome all of them to the Cheetah family. Here’s what Head Coach François René had to say:

“This is a great day for our Women’s Division 1 program. We are very fortunate to add 5 tremendous basketball players & individuals to our team for next season. They are all very talented & tough competitors. Welcome!”

Then on Sunday, our Div.1 and Div.2 Men played a home doubleheader. In the first game, the Div.1 Men faced Outaouais and they continued their perfect season going 7-0 after taking a 90-76 win. With previously undefeated Brébeuf’s loss to Montmorency on Friday evening, the team now has taken sole possession of first place in the league. They next play a road game against 2nd-place Brébeuf on Friday, November 30th starting at 8:00 PM.

DIVISION 2 MEN’S BASKETBALL
In the second game of Sunday afternoon, the Div.2 Men played undefeated Ahuntsic and unfortunately they ended on the short side of a 97-64 result, dropping their season record to 2-5. They will next play a home game VS Marie-Victorin on Friday, November 30th starting at 7:00 PM.

Here is Div.1 Men’s Head Coach Andy Hertzog’s full weekend Basketball report:

“It was a very busy weekend for our Vanier basketball teams, and it was a very successful one for our Division 1 teams.

Friday night our D1 teams had a home doubleheader, with our women hosting Trois-Rivières and our men taking on John Abbott.

In the first game, our women got off to a fast start, taking a 13-4 lead after the first quarter. The visitors started off the second quarter on a 10-0 run to take a 1-point lead, but we closed the period on a 9-2 run of our own to take a 22-16 lead into halftime. We led 29-23 in the 3rd quarter when we went on another 9-0 run to effectively put the game away.  We maintained a comfortable advantage the rest of the game and eventually won 52-40. Our leading scorer was Leahana John with 14 points and 6 rebounds. Debora Aboagye added 10 points, 9 boards and 4 assists.

It was a great night for our women’s team, who not only recorded their first league win of the season, but also signed 5 very promising recruits for next season.

Our women’s D1 team caps off the first half of the season on Friday night, November 30, on the road at Champlain Lennoxville.

Our men’s D1 team actually played 2 games this weekend.  In the first game Friday night against John Abbott, we came out a bit sluggish, but managed to take a 20-14 lead after the first quarter and a 39-27 lead at the half. We exploded after halftime, outscoring our opponents 34-16 in the 3rd quarter and putting the game away. We ended up winning  93-63. Nginyu Ngala continued his hot play of late with 24 points, 8 assists and 4 rebounds. Steeve Joseph had 22 points, 4 assists and 4 rebounds. Karim Mané had 19 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Chris Biekeu added 12 points.

On Sunday, our men’s D1 team hosted Outaouais. This game was a lot closer than many might have anticipated. We led 22-17 after the first quarter and 40-36 at halftime. We maintained the same 4-point advantage going into the final period, but we started off the 4th on a 7-0 run, eventually extended our lead to 19 and won 90-76. We had 6 players score in double figures, led by Karim Mané, who had 27 points (including 4 3`s in the 4th quarter) and 5 assists. Steeve Joseph had 17 points, 6 assists and 4 rebounds. Chris Biekeu had a “double double” with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Joshua Mein and Nginyu Ngala added 11 points each.

Our men’s D1 team is now in first place all alone with a perfect 7-0 record. We cap off the first half of the season on Friday, November 30, at 8:00 at 6-1 Brébeuf. This is the matchup our league has been waiting for all semester.

Yannice Nlend

Yannice Nlend

More good news for our men’s D1 team – we got our first commitment from a  recruit for next season. Yannice Nlend, a starter on the Quebec Provincial U17 team last Summer, and a star player for the Aquilons of Brébeuf (Québec), will be joining the Cheetahs.

Unfortunately, our perfect weekend was spoiled when our men’s Division 2 team dropped a 97-64 decision to unbeaten Ahuntsic. The frist quarter went back and forth and was close all the way, with Ahuntsic taking a 19-17 lead after the first quarter. Our guests pulled away in the second quarter, taking a 48-27 advantage into halftime, leading to a 97-64 loss for the home side. Our leading scorers were Angelo Agenias with 18 points and Luis Jose Martines Cueves with 11. Next Friday, November 30, they host Marie-Victorin at 7:00 PM.”
