The Division 1 Women’s and Men’s Basketball Cheetahs played an away doubleheader against our perennial rivals from Dawson so we knew both matches were going to be hotly contested affairs. For full details on these two games, read on for Coach Andy Hertzog’s game report.

“Our D1 basketball teams went downtown Friday night to take on our traditional rivals from Dawson College.

In the first game, our women had their work cut out for them, as they took on the number 1 ranked team in Canada. But, they were anything but intimidated. We fell behind 8-0 to start the game and trailed 19-11 after the first quarter, but we rallied in the next period, and had a chance to take the lead at halftime, but our 3-point shot rimmed out, and we trailed 31-29 at the half. The home team started the 3rd quarter on a 8-0 run , taking a 10-point advantage which they maintained at the end of the period. We could not get any closer, and we finally lost 80-66. We had 4 players score in double figures, led by Leahana John with 19 points. Penelope Mathieu had 14 points and 6 rebounds. April Whyne had 11 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Debora Aboagye added 10 points, 7 boards and 4 assists.

In the second half of the doubleheader, our men started off slowly, turning the ball over on our first 3 possessions, and trailing 7-2. But, we turned things around quickly and took a 19-13 lead after the first quarter. The game remained close throughout the second period, and our lead was 34-30 at the half. We increased our advantage to 12 points in the 3rd quarter, and led by 10 going into the final period. We led 64-54, but Dawson then went on a 9-0 run to reduce our lead to a single point. We led 69-67 a short time later, but then we went on a 11-0 run of our own down the stretch to put the game away. We finally won by a margin of 81-69. Nginyu Ngala had a huge game for us with 28 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 5 steals. Steeve Joseph had 17 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. Pier-Olivier Racine had another “double double” with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Our league record remains perfect at 5-0.

Our D1 teams have next weekend off. Our women next play at home on Friday, November 23 at 7:00 PM against Trois-Rivières. Our D1 men have 2 home games that weekend, hosting John Abbott on Friday at 9:00 and Outaouais on Sunday, November 25 at 1:00 PM.
