Our Division 1 Men’s and Women’s basketball teams returned to league action this past weekend and had mixed results. In the first games of 2018, a Friday evening home doubleheader against the Montmorency Nomades, the Lady Cheetahs came up on the short end of a 82-55 decision and the Div. 1 Men lost their game 85-77. Then on Sunday, they played a road doubleheader at Edouard-Montpetit, and although the Women’s team lost 56-49, the Div. 1 Men came up with an 81-71 victory to improve their season record to 8 wins and 2 losses.

They will next play a road doubleheader on Friday, January 26th where they’ll face the Champlain Cavaliers. Women play at 7:00 PM and Men play at 9:00 PM. Our men’s Division 2 team will resume league play this Friday at home at 8:00 PM, when they take on rival Dawson College.

Here is Coach Andy Hertzog’s full report on all weekend action:

Our Vanier Division 1 basketball teams opened up the second half of the schedule with a home doubleheader against Montmorency last night. Unfortunately, the evening didn’t go as we would have hoped.

In the first game, our women got off to a blazing start from the 3-point line and took an early lead against the favoured Nomades. We led 22-19 after the first quarter, and were still ahead 26-24 in the second period when the Nomades went on a 12-2 run to take the lead. The game was still close at halftime, with the Cheetahs down 34-28, but Montmorency kept building their lead, taking a 61-45 advantage after 3 quarters and ultimately winning 82-55. Our leading scorer was Deborah Aboagye with 20 points. Catherine Destin had 15 points and Meagan Charbonneau added 10.

The second game was a highly anticipated match between our first place Cheetahs and the defending national champion Nomades. This was the first game this season where Montmorency had its entire lineup from last season able to play together. The game was exciting and entertaining, although the final result was disappointing for us. We jumped out to a 10-5 lead to open the game, but the Nomades came back and took a 23-18 lead after the first quarter. They opened up a 9-point lead early in the second quarter, but we came back and went ahead 43-42, before Momo finished with the last 4 points pf the period. So, we trailed 46-43 at halftime. Momo increased its lead to 53-45 to start the 3rd quarter, but we went on a 9-0 run to claim the lead at 54-53. Momo followed that with a 6-0 run of its own, and eventually took a 68-59 lead into the final period. They built that lead to as many as 17 points in the final period and we ultimately lost 85-77. Our leading scorer was Nginyu Ngala, who hit 6 3-point shots and scored 18 points. Steeve Joseph had 17 points to go along with 6 assists and 4 steals. Josh Koulamallah had 12 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists before fouling out. Swann Fargeau Faucon added 8 points and 9 rebounds.

Our Division 1 basketball teams next played a road doubleheader on Sunday afternoon against Edouard-Montpetit, in Longueuil.

The first game was a back-and-forth affair. Our ladies got off to a good start and led 11-9 after the first quarter. However, the Lynx turned things around in the second period and took a 25-20 lead into halftime. We came out strong in the 3rd quarter and quickly reclaimed the lead, and were up 40-37 going into the final period. Unfortunately we could not maintain the advantage, and we lost by a score of 56-49. Our leading scorer was Catherine Destin with 12 points. Jessica Muha had a “double double” with 10 points and 1 rebounds. Debora Aboagye added 8 points and 13 boards.

In the second game, our men got off to a good start and led 20-14 after the first quarter. We extended our lead to 11 late in the second period, but our hosts went on a 12-2 run to end the half, and our lead at halftime was trimmed to 31-30. Edouard-Montpetit started off the 3rd quarter with an 8-2 run to take a 5-point lead. We then turned things around and took a 9-point lead going into the final period. We then extended our advantage to 15 points and ultimately won 81-71. Our leading scorer was Steeve Joseph with 19 points. Karim Mané scored 11 points and J.F. Daho added 10.

This Friday our Division 1 teams return to the South Shore to take on the Champlain Cavaliers. The women’s game is at 7:00 PM and the men’s game follows at 9:00. Our men’s Division 2 team will resume league play this Friday at home at 8:00 PM, when they take on rival Dawson College. Come out and support your Cheetahs!
