Here is a recap from Head Coach Andy Hertzog

Our men’s Division 1 basketball team took part in the Sun Youth Holiday tournament this weekend. Our first game was scheduled for Friday afternoon, but our opponents arrived very late and we ended up winning by forfeit.

In our second game Saturday morning, we took on a talented team from Thetford Academy. We played very well as a team and led from start to finish. We led by as much as 25 points before finally winning 79-63. Unfortunately, the victory came at a high price. One of our key players, Godsman Kwakwah, suffered an ankle injury, and he will be out for a few weeks. Everyone on our team scored in the game. Our leading scorer was Jahfari Coulombe with 13 points. Ibrahim Ngom had 12 points and Arnaud Boyer Cillis added 11. Benji Bercovitch and Karim Sabban chipped in with 8 points each.

We played the semifinal Saturday evening against Kimball Union Academy from New Hampshire. We got off to a good start and led 19-16 after the first quarter. Unfortunately, the wheels fell off in the second quarter. We led 24-20, but then our opponents went on an 11-0 run to take a lead which they would not relinquish for the rest of the game. We trailed by 16 in the 4th quarter, but then went on a 12-0 run to cut the deficit to 4 points with more than a minute remaining, but we made a couple of mistakes which allowed KUA to score, and then we had to try to foul to get the ball back. We ended up losing 78-68. We had 3 players score in double figures – Ibrahim Ngom had 22 points, Djibril Ngom had 12 and Swann Fargeau Faucon had 10. Jahfari Coulombe and Etienne Simard chipped in with 9 and 8 points respectively.

It was a proud day for our men’s basketball program recently when Basketball Quebec named its coaches for the Quebec Provincial boys’ teams for the Canada Games this summer. All 3 head coaches are former Cheetahs players. Damian Buckley will be coaching the U14 team, Shawn Alleyne will be coaching the U15 team and Nathan Grant will be coaching the U17 team. Congratulations to all 3 fine young coaches !

We will be holding our annual holiday open gym scrimmages on Tuesday, December 27 and Thursday, December 29, from 2:00-4:00 PM. You are all welcome to come play and burn off some of the holiday food !

Finally, l hope that all our Cheetah alumni and friends, as well as those close to you, have a very pleasant and relaxing holiday season and a terrific New Year marked by good health, happiness and success.
