Basketball Update

Our Weekly update from Head Coach Andy Hertzog

It was a horrible weekend for our Vanier basketball teams, which went a collective 0-3.

On Friday night, our women’s team and men’s division 2 team travelled to Gatineau for a doubleheader at Nouvelles-Frontieres.

In the first game, our women closes of their season with a 57-50 loss. Our leading scorer was Nayra Abdel Fattah with 11 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Claira Twizere added 9 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Ekaterini Stoupas had 8 points and 14 boards. Meagan Charbonneau chipped in with 8 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals.

In the second game, our men’s D2 team lost 90-86 to Nouvelles-Frontieres (details not available).

Our men’s D2 team closed off their regular season with a 78-66 home loss to Brebeuf, which is ranked 2nd in Canada. We got off to terrible start (down 9-0) and things just got worse from there. We were down 20-7 after the first quarter Our visitors increased their lead in the second quarter to 21, but we then went on a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to 14. Unfortunately, Brebeuf hit a 3 at the busser and we trailed 42-25 at the half. Things got progressively worse in the second half, and we trailed 64-34 after 3 quarters. Down 72-41 in the 4th, we went on a 23-2 run to get back to within 8 with 2 minutes left, but that was as close as we would come, and we lost 78-66. Our leading scorer was Steeve Joseph with 19 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Quarry Whyne had 12 points and 5 boards. Ibrahim Ngom had 11 points, 3 assists and 3 steals.

Our men’s Division 1 team will host a playoff quarterfinal game on Tuesday, February 28 against either Ste Foy or John Abbott (details to follow).  Our men’s Division 2 team continues their regular season and is at home to Saint-Jean on Sunday, February 26, at 1:00 PM.

Our men’s Division 1 team completed their recruiting for next year by signing guard Shevon Noel. Shevon was MVL of last year’s GMAA championship, leading his Lasalle Catholic team to the title. He was named MVP of this year’s GMAA all-star game.  Shevon also plays in the MBL for the Lasalle Boys & Girls Club, where he has been coached by alums Robert Gibbs and Louis Chevrier.

Finally, our sincere condolences go out to alum Shawn Critchlow, whose grandmother passed away recently.
