Here is our Weekly basketball update from Head coach of the Men’s Division 1 Team Andrew Hertzog
It was an emotional night for our Division 1 basketball teams, as we hosted our traditional rivals from Dawson College. It was also a special night as the evening was dedicated to issues of mental health, and because it was also Senior Night.
Before the first game, our women’s team paid tribute to its one graduating senior, Claira Twizere. Claira had a solid night with 16 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals, but it wasn’t enough as her team fell to the Lady Blues by a score of 78-41. Mikitshi Basambombo had 7 points and 6 boards, and Jessica Muha chipped in with 6 points and 5 rebounds.
In the second game, our men’s team sought to avenge a loss to Dawson in our first league game of the season. Before the game we paid tribute to no less than 8 graduating seniors – Arnaud Boyer Cillis, Jahfari Coulombe, Godsman Kwakwah, Djibril Ngom, Ibrahim Ngom, Leon Ortizo, Karim Sabban and Etienne Simard.
We took an early 13-4 lead to open the game, but we did not score again for the rest of the period, and Dawson actually took a 15-13 lead after the quarter, and maintained its margin, at 27-25, at halftime. We took over in the 3rd quarter, and led 49-35 going into the final period. We extended our lead to 20 points early in the 4th quarter and eventually won 65-56.
We had a very balanced scoring attack. Our leading scorer was Godsman Kwakwah, who had a “double double” with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Swann Fargeau Faucon had 9 points and 10 boards. Arnaud Boyer Cillis had 10 points and 8 boards. Steeve Joseph and Jahfari Coulombe added 8 points each.
Our men’s Division 2 team goes on the road at Maisonneuve this Sunday. Game time is 1:00 PM. Our women’s team concludes its season on the road at Nouvelles Frontieres next Friday at 7:00 PM. Our men’s Division 1 team wraps up its regular season at home on Sunday, February 19 at 2:00 PM at home against Brebeuf.
