TEXT OF THE SPEECH GIVEN FOR THIS AWARD

At this time, we would like to honour someone’s outstanding contribution to Vanier College Athletics. Exceptionally this year, we will have two recipient of this award. The quality of the athletic teams at Vanier is due in part to the coaches that make that commitment to their players and to the school.  The contribution of this person is worthy of recognition. This individual is very devoted to Vanier and is relentlessly giving a lot of time to his passion. He came to Vanier in 1988 and had been a basketball coach for over 20 years.

He made his debut as the head coach of the men’s AA program where he guided them to league championships in 1991 and 1997. Under his leadership, the team also received the sportsmanship award in 1991 and 1992. In 2000, he became the head coach of the AAA program and led them to a league and provincial championship in 2005. The AAA men also participated twice in the National championship in 2003 and 2005.

He has kept in touch with most of the players that he coached for the 20 years, since, when they enter Vanier basketball, in a way they become part of his immediate family. He is very generous of his time and always available for his players. He also is the connector between alumni as he shares results and news in his weekly alumni newsletter. He has also been a member of the Vanier College Foundation since its creation in 1993 and has been the president of the foundation for the last 10 years.

It is my pleasure to announce one of the winners of the 2009 OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION AWARD… from the AAA men’s basketball team, the head coach, Mr. ANDREW HERTZOG.
