MALE
ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARD
Liam Mahoney accepts his prize from Linda Macpherson
SPEECH MADE FOR THE PRESENTATION OF THIS AWARD Once again the candidates for this year's athlete of the year are outstanding. During his 3 year career at Vanier College we have watched this young man emerge into one of the top players in the province. He is a captain of his team who leads by example and takes his leadership role seriously. Over his 3 years at Vanier he has demonstrated a work ethic that has set the standard for his team. He saved his best for the big games and when the games were on the line always seemed to find a way to get the job done. He was named to the League's All Star Team this season, named his team's most valuable player and ranked as the number one player in the province by the Quebec Sport Federation. He became the type of player that Vanier's opposition had to devise ways to attempt to shut down his multi dimensional game trying to defend his superb passing skills while also having to shut down his most dangerous attribute - his running game. There were countless situations where he seemingly was tackled or trapped with nowhere to go yet Liam always found a way to make a great play out of near disaster. He threw 96 completed passes this year for a total of 1, 526 yards and 15 touchdowns - he scored another 6 touchdowns himself and rushed for a total of 497 yards. His leadership skills and competitive nature helped propel Vanier to win their 1st Bol d'Or Championship in 15 years, where he was named the Most Valuable Player of the game on the offensive side of the ball. Recruited by many schools across the country, Liam has decided to attend Concordia University this fall where he will study communications and play with the Stingers. He has had an outstanding career at Vanier College and embodies all that we ask our student-athletes to be, representing us at all times with dignity and class. The Vanier College 2007 Male Athlete of the Year is Liam Mahoney. (Presented by Athletic
