KABONGO AWARDED 2ND STRAIGHT DAVID BOONE
AWARD FOR HIS COMMUNITY WORK IN EDMONTON

Former Vanier Cheetahs star player Patrick Kabongo was recently presented with his second consecutive David Boone Award, which is given to recognize outstanding work in the community by a member of the Edmonton Eskimos. Congratulations, Patrick! You make us all proud.


Here's a brief recap of Patrick's career.

2009: (Edmonton) Kabongo has 16 starts at right guard. Besides his David Boone Award, he is also the Eskimo nominee for the CFLPA's Tom Pate Award which is awarded during Grey Cup week to a player for his commitment to the league, his team and his community.

2008: (Edmonton) Kabongo played in all 18 games (18 starts), East Semi-Final and East Final at right guard. He was this year's recipient of the David Boone Award, voted on by his teammates, for his work in the community. He is also the 2008 Eskimo nominee for the CFLPA's Tom Pate Memorial Award which is awarded during Grey Cup week to a player for his commitment to the league, his team and his community. Patrick was named a 2008 West Division All-Star.

Career: Pat signed as an undrafted free agent April 2004 with the Detroit Lions and attended their 2004 training camp. After his release, Kabongo signed with Ottawa and was added to the practice roster. He was then traded to Edmonton in August 2004 where he was switched to the offensive line and came off the practice roster to appear in the final game of the regular season. He played in 12 games in 2005 and 18 games in 2006. In 2007 he started all 18 games for the green and gold at right tackle and was named a CFLPA All-Star.

College/Personal: He played for the Nebraska Cornhuskers and finished second among D-linemen with 62 tackles in 2002. Patrick was a two time member of Nebraska’s Brooks Berringer Citizenship Team and in 2003 was awarded the Brooks Berringer Memorial Scholarship. Pat was born in Zaire and moved to Montreal when he was a 3-year-old. In the off-season Patrick plays on the Eskimo basketball team and is active in the Stay in School program.

We were also happy to hear in April 2008 that Patrick was honoured with a selection as a CFLPA (Canadian Football League Players Association) All-Star. Read the story. After leaving Vanier, Patrick went on to the University of Nebraska and has been a regular with the Eskimos for six seasons. He appeared with them (as well as two other Vanier Football alumni) in the 2005 Grey Cup. Read the story.
