VANIER WRESTLING COACH WINS MAJOR GRANT
Congratulations to Victor Zilberman who has been awarded a $10,000 grant to help current world champion (and Vanier Phys Ed teacher) Martine Dugrenier prepare for the 2012 Olympics in London. Victor had also recently won the Quebec Coach of the Year award for the third time in December 2009. You can check out our Wrestling home page to find out.

AAA WOMEN CAPTURE BRONZE AT PROVINCIALS AAA MEN'S TEAM LOSES OT THRILLER TO DAWSON

After winning their quarter-final match on Friday, our AAA Lady Basketball Cheetahs rebounded from a tough loss in the semi-finals to Ste-Foy on Saturday to win the Bronze Medal match VS Montmorency on Sunday. The AAA Men's season ended when they lost 85-83 in OT to Dawson in their quarter-final match Friday. Click for.

On Friday evening, the AAA Basketball teams finished their regular seasons with a pair of wins at home. The Ladies defeated Champlain St. Lawrence 78-58 and the AAA Men followed with a solid 89-61 win over Limoilou. Next are the Provincials starting Friday at Collège Ahuntsic. Click for.

Our AAA men’s team defeated Ahuntsic in a tremendous road victory on Wednesday evening. However, the AA Men's team lost on Thursday to Dawson 94-54. The AAA teams finish the regular season with a doubleheader on Friday. The Ladies face Champlain St. Lawrence at 7pm while the AAA Men play Limoilou at 9pm. LADY CHEETAHS WIN 10TH IN A ROW AA MEN LOSE AWAY GAME AT JEAN-DE-BRÉBEUF

On Sunday afternoon, the AAA Basketball Lady Cheetahs played a road game at Trois-Rivières and came away with their 10th straight victory by the score of 63-57. The win pushed their league record to 13-3. Elsewhere, the AA Men's team lost to Brébeuf 82-51 on Friday. Click for.

As assistant therapist for the Als, Max Hanna, Vanier Cheetahs Head Athletic Therapist had 24 hours to show the cup which he did in G-204 on January 12th. The Cup revisited Vanier during UB on Wed, Jan. 27th at the gym with several Alouettes also in attendance including Cheetah alumni Danny Desriveaux and Shawn Mayne, as well as Max Hanna and others. VICTOR ZILBERMAN IS QUEBEC COACH OF THE YEAR DUGRENIER NOMINATED FOR FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
At the Quebec Sports Gala of December 22nd, Vanier Physical Education teachers Victor Zilberman and World Champion wrestler Martine Dugrenier were among the top 3 finalists for Quebec Coach of the Year and Female Athlete of the Year for all sports. While Martine was not selected for the top award, Victor won the Quebec Coach of Year for the 3rd time. (Victor had previously won in 1982 and 1985). Congratulations to you both! At the league Awards Banquet on Saturday, December 12th, Cheetahs figured prominently in the All-Star team awards. Jérémi Roch (left) was top quarterback, Offensive MVP and overall MVP. The AAA Men's team played very well last weekend as Vanier hosted the Prep Challenge. We beat REDA 81-71 on Saturday and then defeated the team from Etobicoke by the score of 95-86 on Sunday. The AAA Women's and Men's teams both had successful road trips on Friday evening. The ladies won their 4th in a row, beating Champlain-St.Lawrence 74-57 while the AAA Men defeated Limoilou 88-79. The AA Men's team, however, came up short on Saturday with a 90-72 road loss to Nouvelles-Frontières. Scoring details to follow soon.

Danny Desriveaux and Shawn Mayne (at left, on top) joined a long list of former Football Cheetahs who played on Grey Cup winning teams after Sunday's heart-stopping victory. They are the first ex-Cheetahs to win as members of the Montreal Alouettes since Als stalwart Paul Lambert (at left, on bottom right) joined in 2003. TENNIS TEAM WINS SILVER

Following a tough semi-final series of matches against second-place Brébeuf on Sunday, our Tennis Team secured a hard-fought win to advance to the playoff Finals next Sunday. AMATEUR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Congratulations to Gregory Rossy who was the subject of a Gazette article subsequent to his being named Amateur Athlete of the Week on November 4th. In 2008, Greg took gold medals at the provincial junior championship and the Quebec Open. This year, he claimed a bronze medal in freestyle and a silver in Greco-Roman at the national juvenile championships to go with a gold medal in the junior category at the Canada Cup, an international event. The AAA Football team won again on the road in Québec City against the F-X Garneau Élans on Saturday by the score of 29-10. QB Jérémi Roch threw 2 TD passes in the win. His favourite target was Vincent Cléroux who hauled in 5 catches for 72 yards including one for a TD. Click for.

The AAA Football team had a successful outcome in their home game on Saturday, winning easily 42-7 over Édouard-Montpetit. The AA Women's Soccer team lost 2-0 in the quarterfinals of playoff action on Thursday evening. They were beaten by a worthy opponent from Ahuntsic who, like the Lady Cheetahs, had finished first in their division with an almost identical 6-1-1 record. The Vanier College AAA Football Cheetahs, led by our new QB Jérémi Roch (left) won yet again to push their record to 5-0 by beating the Lennoxville Cougars 24-21 in overtime on the road on Saturday. Without a doubt, Vanier wrestling alumna Martine Dugrenier is currently the most successful woman wrestler in all of Canada. She cemented that reputation by winning her 2nd straight World Championship in her category on September 25, 2009 at the World Wrestling Championships held in Herning, Denmark. WOMEN'S SOCCER TEAM WINS FOURTH STRAIGHT CEMENT THEIR FIRST PLACE STANDING IN THE LEAGUE

The Vanier College AA Lady Soccer Cheetahs defeated Montmorency 2-0 in a home game last night. Goals were scored by Vanessa Miniaci and Jessica-Bianca Ziernicki (#13 at left). The win cemented the team's first place in the league. They next play a home game on Friday, October 2nd at 7PM VS St-Jean. Come out and support this exciting team!
VANIER MOURNS THE LOSS OF RICKY ZIEBA
It was with tremendous shock and sadness that we learned of the tragic death of Ricky Zieba in a car accident on June 24th. Ricky, who was currently playing football for the Concordia Stingers, was also a star player with the Vanier Cheetahs during his years with us. To read the story from the Montreal Gazette, click for. VANIER SUCCESSFULLY DEFENDS ITS TITLE AT THE 2009 MCGILL INTRAMURAL FESTIVAL
For the second consecutive year, Vanier brought home the title of Champions from the 37th Annual McGill Intramural Festival played on April 3rd. All six English Cégeps enjoyed a fun evening of friendly competition in Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, Badminton and Dodgeball.
It was another close win as we squeaked ahead of Dawson by a mere 2 points. Congratulations to the 60 students who participated and made history with the first ever repeat win for Vanier. Click on the photo for a high-res version.

MARTY NAMED CANADIAN PLAYER OF THE YEAR! ALSO NAMED AS A CCAA FIRST TEAM ALL-CANADIAN AND AS AN ACADEMIC ALL-CANADIAN, TOO!
Congratulations to Marie-Eve (Marty) Martin of the AAA Lady Cheetahs Basketball team who had her highest honour ever added to her list of accolades when she was named by the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association as their Women's Basketball Player of the Year. AAA LADY CAGERS' SEASON ENDS MARTIN IS LEAGUE MVP / VIRAY IS TOP COACH
The AAA Lady Basketball Cheetahs' drive to a third consecutive Provincial Championship ended after their loss in the semi-finals to the Dawson Blues. However, at the League Awards Banquet, Marie-Eve Martin won the MVP trophy and Ruby Viray won Coach of the Year. Click for.
MYLES GIBBON SIGNS WITH USA JAGUARS
Myles Gibbon, (left) last year's star Cheetahs quarterback, recently signed a Letter of Intent with the University of South Alabama Jaguars. With his selection, Myles becomes the first Canadian quarterback ever signed by a Division 1-A American university in his first year. This is the university's inaugural year in the highly competitive Sun Belt Conference. Congratulations, Myles, on this huge honour! Read the whole story.
WRESTLING ALUMNI SHINE AT NATIONALS
No fewer than six former Vanier wrestling stars competed in the Canadian National Championships which just concluded at Calgary. Top honours went to David Tremblay (top row, centre) who not only won Gold in his weight class, but was also named Wrestler of the Tournament. Also winning a Gold Medal was Alex Dyas (bottom row, centre). Other alumni on the podium were David Zilberman, Bronze Medal (top row, right) and Nikita Chicoine, Bronze Medal (bottom row, left).
