Commerce Major

This is a two-year pre-university program offering students their first formal exposure to business studies. Students may choose courses in diverse fields such as international business, business law, management, accounting, and marketing.

COMMERCE 300.32 (Regular)

In the regular Commerce program, students learn basic business concepts, develop an extensive business vocabulary and analyse and evaluate business decision making in many areas of business activity.  Students acquire an understanding of the key business functions and the complex environment in which they operate. In this option, many different methods of student evaluation are used. These may include tests, projects, exams, research papers and case studies.

COMMERCE ( Major in International Business) 300.32

The Commerce Major offers the same courses to students, but the focus of each course is an international one. This profile is ideal for students interested in the effects of globalization and the role of business in globalization. Current affairs are central and teamwork is encouraged. Students learn about other cultures and the effect of culture on business leaders and the decisions they make. Much of the course content is research based. Students develop strong bonds since they are a unique group pre-registered in specific courses designed especially for this major. At the end of their studies, students receive a Vanier College certificate for successful completion of the profile. Please note that the teaching methods used in the international majors option is primarily research based. This Commerce Major is available in the Fall semester only.

Graduation Requirements
In order to graduate students must pass an English Exit Exam as well as the Comprehensive Assessment (Épreuve synthèse de programme) by the end of the fourth semester.

Applicants with post-secondary education will be evaluated on their overall academic performance and prerequisite standing.

Students missing the math prerequisite should call the Admissions Office to discuss how to make up the prerequisites.

Application Deadlines (Fall and winter)
The application deadline is March 1 for the fall semester, which begins in late August. The application deadline is November 1 for the winter semester, which begins in late January.

HONOURS COMMERCE PROGRAM
Honours Commerce is a program for students with high academic standing, interest and ability in Commerce. This program promotes and recognizes academic excellence.
Students in the Honours Commerce Program follow the same courses as other Commerce Students. However, they must take the special Honours sections of Quantitative Methods, Research Methods, the Integrative Project course, and the Honours B-Block Humanities course entitled Ethical Issues.
Students in the Commerce Major in International Business are also eligible for the Honours program.

What are the Benefits of the Honours Commerce Program?
Enrichment
The program provides students with the opportunity to pursue some advanced studies at the Cegep level. This is helpful when applying to university and can provide a head start for students planning to go into a university honours program, graduate school, or a competitive program.

Recognition
Each Honours course is indicated on the student's transcript. Every student who successfully completes the Honours program receives an Honours Commerce attestation from Vanier College.

Faculty Support
Students are taught by experienced and dedicated faculty members who provide special tutorial support and also volunteer to devote extra time to their students.

Group Identification
Students and teachers form a cohesive community within the larger college. Students work together in class and outside of class. They provide friendship and support for each other.

What are the Admission Requirements?
Students can apply to this program only after they have completed one semester in Commerce at Cegep. They will be accepted from among the applicants on the basis of their overall averages, with special reference to Social Science and Commerce course grades during the autumn semester. To be eligible for selection, students must have completed seven courses including three concentration courses, one of which must be Calculus I. Students who are accepted in this program will be notified in early January before their registration appointments.

What are the Program Requirements?
• Students will be required to complete all requirements for a DEC in Commerce within two years. Summer school and intensive courses are allowed.
• Students will be registered in special honours sections of Quantitative Methods, Research Methods, the Integrative Project course and the Honours B-Block Humanities course. A minimum of 70% is required in each of these courses.
• Students must obtain an overall average of 80% in five of the eight Social Science and Commerce courses in their last three semesters at Vanier College.

When to apply?
A student must apply by the last day of classes during the autumn semester of the first term at Vanier.
