A College Major is a cluster of at least four (4) courses from three or more disciplines related by a common theme taken by students over several semesters. College Majors are open to students from most programs offered at Vanier. A major receives certification only within Vanier College and thus does not appear on any official Department of Education documentation. On graduation from the College, students will receive a Ministry diploma in the program in which they are registered plus a certificate from the area responsible for the major. At present, Vanier College offers majors in Jewish Studies, Quebec/Canada Studies, Slavic Studies, and Women’s Studies.

JEWISH STUDIES

Who takes “Jewish Studies” Courses? The Jewish Studies Program is open to all Vanier students who wish to expand their knowledge about Jews, Judaism and Israel. Jewish Studies courses are interdisciplinary, ranging through literature, history, religion, language, psychology, sociology, politics and popular culture. They are designed to appeal to Jewish and non-Jewish students by enabling them to see Jewish life and culture in the context of their world as it relates to their own consciousness and sensibility. This provides the background necessary to further study in Jewish Studies and other fields of knowledge.

HOW TO EARN A JEWISH STUDIES MAJORS CERTIFICATE

Students are awarded a Majors Certificate by completing either one of the following course patterns: I. Five (5) courses, of which at least three are defined as “Core” Jewish Studies courses, and the remainder as “Related” courses, or approved Jewish Studies Projects in a variety of courses across the curriculum. II. Six (6) courses, of which at least two are defined as “Core” Jewish Studies courses, and the remainder as “Related” courses or approved Jewish Studies Projects. Students may also complete their requirements for a Certificate by arranging for a Jewish Studies Tutorial. COURSES All Jewish Studies courses are given as normal credit courses within their respective academic disciplines. Course descriptions may be found under the listings of English, Modern Languages, Humanities, Political Science, Sociology, etc. A sufficient number of the required “Core” and “Related” courses is normally available on a rotating basis over a two-year period.
