PHOTOS FROM 1970 TAKEN IN THE OFFICE
AND STUDIO OF CKVR (RADIO VANIER)

Special thanks to former student Paul Starr (a student who attended in the very first year that Vanier opened its doors) who submitted to us a large number of candid photos taken mainly in the College's radio station CKVR. There are also a few photos taken at other locations including the cafeteria and the old Health Food Store.

The photos have been uploaded to a Picasa album where you can see them in a slideshow. If you want, you can press escape to exit the slideshow and then download relatively high resolution versions of any individual photo.

More on the Bookstore's History from Louis Contant:

June 18, 2012

The Bookstore opened during Vanier’s first year, autumn 1970, and was located deep in the A Wing. We operated out of a corner of the sub-basement near the old Gymnasium and Athletics Department (which is now the Auditorium). John Kirk was the manager at that time, and I was hired as a casual assistant. John Kirk died in July 1984 and I became manager, remaining there until April 1993, when I retired and Bill Perkins ably took over the store’s operations. Bill also supervised the major move of the Bookstore from the sub-basement to its present expanded first floor entrance location.

During 1970-1971, our first academic year, the hurriedly improvised Bookstore served an initial enrollment of approximately 1500 students. Over the years the student population mushroomed and so did the volume of traffic in books and supplies; the store continued to expand and modernize and adjust in that subterranean location. The staff, however, remained constant over the years, and the people working there were exceptional—all genuinely dedicated to the task, enthusiastic and highly capable. We all truly enjoyed working together as a team. When I look back on those years, as I often do, I feel privileged to have shared in the Vanier Bookstore experience.

- Louis Contant

Editor's note: We're sorry to have to say that Lou Contant passed on in October of 2013. Read more.

PHOTOS FROM JUDITH LERMER CRAWLEY

This shot was taken in the field that was to become the site of the future N Building. The students are doing a visual exercise where a student keeps his eyes closed while being led by another, until he is told to open his eyes and look at an object in front of him.

Current teacher Karen Tennenhouse is seen at right in this photo from the early 1980s.

These Women's Studies students were photographed during a class discussion.

When the New Building was inaugurated by Claude Ryan, the Minister of Education, on February the 13th 1987, students, teachers and staff who were opposed to the project demonstrated. A riot squad was called in, much to the surprise and disgust of the peaceful demonstrators. The Academic Dean at the time, Alex Potter is addressing those assembled. As the riot squad left, the unhappy and disgruntled demonstrators dispersed.

In the above photo (and the one below) the person on the right holding the large “Vanier Nous Souviendrons” sign and leading the student marchers is current English teacher Henry Tambor.

In the last photo we see Sylvia d'Appallonia at far left and Bjorn Urhammer and Louis Belle-Isle at right.
