This program offers courses designed to prepare you for university study in a number of different fields and ultimately for a wide range of careers. In the language portion of our program we offer beginner, intermediate and advanced levels of instruction in German, Italian, Russian, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. We offer specialized courses for advanced students and native speakers. Modern Languages students have the advantage of being part of a large Cegep with excellent facilities and wide course choice in addition to belonging to a small, friendly program that provides individualized attention and very supportive relations between students and faculty. This program is an excellent choice for anybody interested in pursuing university studies and careers in the following areas:

• Languages • Literature • Translation • Interpretation • Journalism
• Communication Studies • History • Political Studies
• Education and Foreign Development • Government Service • Banking
• Hotel Management • International Relations • Public Relations
• Tourism Industry

Department Facilities
We have an attractive language resource centre where students work on projects and assignments and receive friendly assistance from our resource technician. We also have a sophisticated multi-media computer lab for language studies.

Faculty Advisors
One of the great difficulties students face in coming to Cegep is the adjustment to large institutions. Our program offers a faculty advisor to every entering student, whose role is to help you with any problems and concerns you may have during your first year at Vanier.

Courses
The aim of the Modern Languages Program is to provide students with a comprehensive background so that they will be well prepared for university studies and ultimately the job market.

The following courses are taken by all students in the program:
• Cultural Currents I
• Foreign Language Cinema
• Cultural Currents II
• Languages and the New Technologies
• The Story of Language
• Integrating Seminar

All students in Modern Languages take two Cultural Currents courses providing them with a cultural and historical framework. Art, literature and music from classical times to the present are the major themes. Visits to art galleries, museums, theatre and concerts are an important part of the program.

In Foreign Language Cinema students learn about cultures related to the languages they are studying by viewing and discussing foreign films.

In The Story of Language students are introduced to basic notions of language and linguistics. Among the topics examined are phonetics, language change, word structure, sentence structure, sign systems, meaning, language and the mind, and child language acquisition. Students apply the notions learned to examine the development of a language studied in their program.

In Languages and the New Technologies, students use our new multi-media computer lab in order to learn computer skills to aid them in writing papers, including their Integrating Seminar project. Students will learn to navigate the World Wide Web to communicate with people using their newly-acquired languages and to learn more about the cultures of the speakers of these languages.

The Comprehensive Assessment (Épreuve synthèse de programme) will help students integrate information and skills learned in other courses. In the Integrating Seminar, students will choose a topic, learn how to research the topic and write a research paper. The Comprehensive Assessment is part of the Integrating Seminar. This is a ministerial requirement for students graduating from all programs.

In addition to the six courses listed above, students will take eight language courses. They may choose to study two or three languages. One of the strengths of the Modern Languages program at Vanier is the number of languages we offer, including German, Italian, Russian and Spanish.

Language Studies Develops Skills in Many Areas
Studying languages can help you develop valuable skills that are important to any field of work. Students will learn to better express ideas and to think clearly, acquire insights into human behaviour and motivation, and stimulate their imagination and creativity. Acquired skills that will enhance a student's career are:
• effective speaking
• group communications
• becoming an attentive reader and listener
• improving writing skills
• better able to communicate instructions and feelings
• becoming familiar with reference materials such as dictionaries grammars, and other sources of information
• better understand the literary, historical and artistic context of language studies.

General Studies
As well as concentration courses students are required to take General Studies courses including four English courses, three Humanities courses, two French courses, three Physical Education courses and two complementary courses (courses of their choice outside of the program). This combination is standard in all DEC programs.

Graduation Requirements
In order to graduate students must pass an English Exit Exam as well as the Comprehensive Assessment (Épreuve synthèse de programme) by the end of the fourth semester.
