(an option within the Creative Arts, Literature and Languages program)

INTRODUCTION
The Modern Languages Program offers a variety of courses designed to prepare you for further studies at university and a broad range of careers. Three levels - Beginners, Intermediate, and Advanced - are offered in most of the languages. Specialized courses are available for advanced students and native speakers. Our Program offers the advantages of a small, friendly area in which students can develop close relationships with their fellow students and get to know their teachers well. Also, Modern Languages students benefit from the advantages of a large CÉGEP with excellent facilities and a wide range of courses.

DEPARTMENT FACILITIES/EQUIPMENT

We offer you an attractive language resource centre where you may work on projects and assignments with other students or receive friendly assistance from our resource technician. We also have a new state-of-the-art multi-media computer lab for language studies.

FACULTY ADVISORS

One of the great difficulties students face in coming to CÉGEP is the adjustment to a large institution. Our Program offers a faculty advisor to every entering student, whose role is to help you with problems and concerns during your first year at Vanier.

COURSES
The aim of the Modern Languages Program is to provide student with a comprehensive background in languages so that they will be well prepared for university studies or the job market.

The following courses will be taken by all students in the program:
Cultural Currents I  Foreign Language Cinema
Cultural Currents II  Languages and the New Technologies
The Story of Language  Integrating Seminar

All students in Languages and Literature will take two Cultural Currents courses providing them with a cultural and historical framework. Art, literature and music from classical times to the present are the major themes. Visits to art galleries, museums, theatre and concerts are an important part of the program.

In Foreign Language Cinema students will be able to learn about cultures related to the languages they study by viewing and discussing foreign films.

In The Story of Language, students will be introduced to basic notions of language and linguistics. Among the topics examined are phonetics, language change, word structure, sentence structure, sign systems, meaning, language and the mind, child language learning and animal language. Students will apply the notions learned to examine the development of a language studied in their program.

Languages and the New Technologies is designed to help students to use our new multi-media computer lab in order to navigate the World Wide Web to communicate with people using the target language and learn more about their cultures. Students will learn computer skills that will aid them in writing papers, including the Integrating Seminar.

The Integrating Seminar will help students integrate information and skills learned in other courses, choose a topic, learn how to research the topic and write a research paper, the Integrative Project (Épreuve synthèse), a ministerial requirement for students graduating from all programs.

In addition to the six courses listed above, students will take eight language courses. They may choose to study two or three languages. One of the strengths of the Languages and Literature Program at Vanier is that we offer many languages for students to choose from: German, Greek, Italian, Russian and Spanish. All levels — Beginners, Intermediate, and Advanced — are offered in most of the languages.

GENERAL STUDIES
As well as the concentration courses listed above, students will take four English courses, three Humanities courses, two French courses, three Physical Education courses, and two Complementary courses (courses of their choice outside of the program). This combination is standard in all D.E.C. programs.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
To graduate, you must pass an English Exit Exam as well as the “Épreuve synthèse de programme” (Comprehensive Program Assessment) by the end of your fourth semester.
